Golfer Heads to National Championship, Team Finishes Successful Year
May 17, 2004

Cincinnati State's golf team finished second in the National Junior College Athletic Association District XII Regional Tournament May 9-11 in Battle Creek, Michigan, trailing only defending national champion Columbus State.  The second place finish in the Regional was the highest ever for a Surge golf team.

Freshman Mike Auterson led all golfers in the tournament, thus qualifying for the NJCAA National Tournament to be held June 7-11 in Jamestown, New York.  He is the first Surge golfer ever to win a Regional Tournament.

Coach Scott Webb said of Auterson he "has a very realistic chance of becoming a national champion.  He has a very solid game as he hits the ball straight and far, has an outstanding short game and the mental approach it takes to be a champion.  I look forward to the National Tournament which will allow Mike to show his abilities to the country."

In addition, sophomore Chad Ward qualified as an Academic All-American.  Auterson also qualified as an Academic All-League member with an outstanding first year GPA.  Ward, Jon Feldkamp, Chris Johnson and Jimmy Early have all completed their eligibility as Surge players.  Auterson and Tim Myers will be the only eligible returning players on next year's term.

Coach Webb said "The past two years with this group of players has been the most enjoyable in the 10 seasons that I have coached. This group really wanted to win and committed themselves to doing their best for Cincinnati State and myself and I am proud to have been associated with them."
