For the past 5 seasons, Coach Mike Combs has guided the Cincinnati State Men’s Soccer team to be one of the top soccer programs in the country. Coach Combs is a graduate of Mariemont High School, where he was CHL Player of the Year in 1991. He was inducted into the Mariemont Hall of Fame in 1996. From there, Coach Combs attended Northern Kentucky University, and after playing for the Norse as a center midfielder, he graduated with a B.A. in Education. Combs was honored by making the All-Academic team, Honor Roll, and Dean’s List. In 2005, he received a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from Xavier University.
Coach Combs was at the high school level for 7 years before becoming an assistant coach at Cincinnati State in 2000. The 2001-2002 season found him accepting a full-time coaching position at Earlham College as an assistant men’s soccer coach. Starting in the fall of 2002, Coach Combs became the Head Coach at Cincinnati State. In five seasons, the men’s program has a record of 74 wins, 18 losses and 3 ties. The Surge have won the OCCAC conference championship 3 of the past 4 seasons. In the past 5 seasons, there have been 6 All-Americans. Coach Combs was named “OCCAC Coach of the Year” in 2003, 2004, and 2005.
Coach Combs has a USSF “C” National Coaching License where he received the “Bob McNulty Award”. In 2003 and 2005, he coached the USA Superclubs National Team that played in England against some of the top English Club Teams. There, he recorded 8 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties, a Superclubs record. Coach Combs is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He directs and runs Playmakers Soccer Academy, which provides youth soccer camps in Cincinnati.
Coach Combs and his wife, Lange, reside in Madeira with their newborn daughter Zimmer and their two papillons, Coalton and Mingo.
