What is GEAR-UP?

 

GEAR-UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Preparation. It is designed for students beginning in the 6th grade at selected Cincinnati Public Schools.  GEAR-UP provides services that will enable participants to be prepared to attend the college of their choice upon high school graduation.

 

Who are the GEAR-UP Partners?

 

The Cincinnati GEAR UP Partnership includes Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, the University of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, and the Cincinnati Public Schools.  GEAR UP provides services to 6th, 7th and 8th graders in sixteen CPS Kindergarten to 8th grade schools.

 

What schools participate in GEAR UP?

 

The sixteen schools include (1) Bond Hill, (2) Burton, (3) Central Fairmount, (4) Clifton, (5) East End Heritage, (6) Hayes/Porter/Washburn, (7) Heberele, (8) McKinley (9) Oyler, (10) Parham, (11) Rockdale, (12) Rothenberg, (13) South Avondale, (14) Washington Park, (15) Whittier, and (16) Windsor.

 

What happens after the participants enter high school?

 

GEAR UP staff continues to assist students until graduation and admission into the college or university of their choice.

 

If my child attended any of those schools in the past, does that make them GEAR UP participants?

What services does GEAR UP provide?

 

Each participant partnership school has a homework club that meets directly after school Monday through Thursday.  GEAR UP staff provides additional tutoring, mentoring, and college- related activities for students in the GEAR UP schools.  Summer programs include Science Camp, Math/Computer Camp, Theatre Camp, College Prep Camp and other activities, including college tours.
