What is Upward Bound Math and Science?
It is a TRiO program offered by Cincinnati State and funded by the U. S. Department of Education.
What is the purpose of Upward Bound Math and Science?
To provide high school students interested in math and science careers with experiences that will excite them and prepare them for the college of their choosing.
Who is eligible?
Students from Withrow University School, East End Heritage Community School and students in the Zoo Academy program at Hughes High School and the Cincinnati Zoo.
What are the qualifications?
Students must be first generation college and/or from a low income household.
What does First Generation College mean?
First Generation College means that neither of the parents has graduated from a four year college.
What does it mean to be low income household?
Federal guidelines change yearly, but if a student is eligible for free or reduced lunch at school this will qualify as a low income household.
What age are students?
Students are in grades 9 through 12.
How Do I Apply?
Contact the Upward Bound Math and Science office at 569-1730 for an application. Both parent and student information is required. This will be followed up by a parent, student and Upward Bound staff member interview.
What grades must a student have to participate in Upward Bound Math and Science?
There are no minimum grades when starting the program, but the student must be interested in improving their grades and becoming competitive with other college bound students.
When do students meet?
Students meet at their own school for four days each week immediately after school for College Team. On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday the College Team meets for 90 minutes. On Wednesday the College Team meets for two hours for seminars.
What is a seminar?
Special topics are presented and discussed that will interest students and make them aware of a wide variety of math and science areas, as well as discussion of social issues.
What happens in College Team meetings?
Students complete homework with the help of a tutor. Students will also work on other areas that will improve the student’s grades.
Are there other meetings?
Students from all three schools will have social meetings together and all participants are required to attend six weeks of summer enrichment programs.
When will the summer enrichment program meet?
Summer enrichment will be held the first six weeks of the summer and start at 8:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM.
Where will the summer enrichment program be held?
The summer enrichment program will be held at Cincinnati State and/or at a high school in the area.
Will students stay on the Cincinnati State campus during the summer?
No, Cincinnati State does not have housing facilities for students, so students will be home at night during the summer enrichment program.
Will students visit colleges?
Students will visit a variety of colleges, mostly during the summer program. Juniors and seniors will visit more colleges than freshman and sophomores.
What will I study during the summer enrichment program?
Students will study a variety of programs that will be of high interest. Areas will include science, mathematics, foreign language, study skills and language arts.
Will students get help getting into college?
Yes, students will be assigned a counselor to help with their personal needs and in completing forms for college admission.
Will students get help in getting a job?
The goal is to get students into college, not a job, but students will visit local industries to expose them to careers.
