Healthcare facilities need trained specialists to accurately determine code assignment using ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems. In many instances, financial reimbursement is tied to these numeric codes. This program will prepare an individual for employment as entry-level coding specialists in ambulatory health care settings such as physician group practices, billing companies and surgery centers. This part-time program can be completed in seven terms. All of the courses in the COC program are also part of the two-year associate degree program in Health Information Management. The course schedule includes evenings, weekends and web-based classes.
Graduates will be prepared to work in healthcare facilities that employ entry-level coding specialists to assign ICD-9-CM and CPT codes to diagnoses and procedures. Graduates of the program will be prepared to take a national examination to become a Certified Coding Associate (CCA) from the American Health Information Management Association.
