Occupational Therapy
(OTA)

Occupational therapy makes it possible to face issues such as physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges that prevent people from being active in work, school, leisure, and community pursuits.  As an OTA, you can enable people to more independently participate in and complete activities essential for daily life. Under the supervision of an occupational therapist, the OT assistant is technically qualified to act as a member of the healthcare team.

Graduates will be prepared to...

Ø      Demonstrate entry level competency in analysis of activities, and application of activities to patient care

Ø      Assist with clinical responsibilities in hospitals, nursing homes, adult day care centers, schools, and rehabilitation centers.

Ø      Work with the health care team under the direction of the registered occupational therapist

Ø      Apply occupational therapy concepts and skills to activities of daily living, life skills, group activities, and occupational therapy treatment media

Upon graduation, the graduate will be eligible to take the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam. With success on that exam, the graduate will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). In addition, most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state’s licenses are usually based on the result of the NBCOT certification examination.  Note: A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT exam or attain state licensure.
