Patient Care Assistant Course

 

Prerequisites:

1. Have scores on Compass or TABE testing at a high school level for reading or math (or have taken and passed DE courses)

2.  Be an STNA on the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry

(Permission

may be granted if you have passed the STNA

course with a

“C” or better  with the understanding that no PCA certificate is awarded until

you pass the state test)

 

 

Note:

Instructor consent is required in order to register:

Please complete a

PCA application and submit it

along with a copy of your Nurse Aide Registry card at the Health

and Public Safety Division office

in room 312 of the Health Professions Building to obtain instructor consent.

The Patient Care Assistant is an unlicensed person who supports the professional nurse in providing basic patient care in an acute care setting.  The Patient Care Assistant is able to work in a hospital on General Medical/Surgical units.  The program is designed to build upon the content covered in the Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program.

 

The content of the program addresses:

 

  • Role Definition, Clarification and Patient Focus
  • Communication (including Medical Terminology)
  • Overview of Basic Anatomy & Physiology Concepts and Associated Common Normal/Abnormal Observations
  • Overview of Nutrition and Diet Therapy
  • Pre and Post Operative Care
  • Introduction to Functional Health Patterns Related to Hospitalized Patients and Associated Patient Care Skills
