PC Support and Administration (PCSA)

Students will learn to install, setup,

troubleshoot, and maintain hardware and software for microcomputers. Coursework includes operating systems, data communications, networking, and support center management.

Computer support specialists provide technical assistance, support, and advice to customers and users. These are the troubleshooters responsible for interpreting problems and providing technical support. They use automated diagnostic programs, instruct users, track and resolve recurrent problems.

The PCSA career differs from other programs in three significant ways. First, the sheer number of computers and users creates an ever-changing environment and challenge. Second, using software effectively is a higher priority than creating or modifying programs. Third, the knowledge and skills are largely generic to a class of computers, rather than specific to a particular company, offering job mobility and opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Graduates will have skills

in the following areas:

• PC installation and maintenance

• Operating systems and application software

• Providing training for PC users

• Maintaining documentation for systems and

procedures

Job Titles for Graduates:

• Help Desk Manager

• PC Support Technician

• Technical Support Specialist

• Level I Technician

• Level II Technician

Employment Outlook:

According to a report by The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), over one-third of all new IT positions over the next 12 months will be in technical support. Tech support is ranked as the IT job in the highest demand, with expected growth between 1998 and 2002 of over 222%, with strong growth beyond that. Opportunities abound for women and men in this field due to the rise in Web based business and small office/home office (SOHO) work.
