Library In-Service for Cincinnati
State Faculty

The primary goal of the Johnnie Mae Berry Library and its staff is to support your students in their classes. We also strive to support you in your role as instructor.

The resources we are exploring here are available from any computer on campus. To use them off-campus, you will need the barcode number from the back of your Surge Card. See "Using Library Resources Off-Campus" from the Library’s website.

Books:

Besides the collection of books in support of classes taught at Cincinnati State, we collect education books, particularly

  • two-year education
  • technical education
  • cooperative education
  • education for adults, with a more recent emphasis on the millennial generation

You may suggest books for purchase by emailing debbie.bogenschutz@cincinnatistate.edu, or by sending something through campus mail.

Choose BLINK from the list to the left and we'll do some exercises using BLINK, and then we'll move on to search OhioLINK. (Through the OhioLINK system you have access to books at libraries throughout Ohio. You can request books be sent here from other libraries, and most will be received in 3-4 days.) We’ll pay particular attention to the built-in "Help".

We also have several collections of "E-Books"; let's choose that link and explore.

Media:

Media programs owned by the Library can also be found in BLINK. Faculty can check out media programs, but students must use them in the Library. There is also a collection of "digital media". These programs can be show via the internet in your classrooms, or assigned to students for independent use.

You may suggest media programs for purchase by emailing debbie.bogenschutz@cincinnatistate.edu, or by sending something through campus mail. We will also try to acquire digitals rights for programs you suggest. However, some producers are not making the products available digitally, or are offering them at a price we simply cannot afford.

Let's select "Digital Media" from the column to the left and see what kinds of things are available.

Periodicals:

Periodicals to which the Library subscribes in paper or on microfiche can be found in BLINK. In addition to these titles, we have access to the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center, providing cover-to-cover issues of journals that OhioLINK receives electronically as they are published. Many of the periodical indexes to which we subscribe also include links to most, if not all, of the full-text indexed. If you have a citation to a particular article, the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Finder will help you find the full-text online, if it is available. If the full-text you require is not available, please contact brad.conroy@cincinnatistate.edu for interlibrary loan services.

Periodical indexes and the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center can be searched by subject. Often you will find a link to the full-text of the articles indexed.

OhioLINK databases are intended to support freshmen through doctoral students in a vast array of subjects. The Library has chosen those most helpful to our students for its "Periodicals Indexes" section. Let’s choose that link, and use some general indexes, and then some specific to the humanities and sciences. For your own advanced research, you may need to use additional OhioLINK databases. Your graduate institution may well subscribe to additional databases.

Resources for Educators:

The link to "Resources for Educators" provides information about linking to OhioLINK resources within your BlackBoard class, access to education databases, and links to various educational associations.

Cyber Discovery Lab:

The Cyber Discovery Lab can be booked by you for your classes.  Email rdl@cincinnatistate.edu or telephone extension 1606.  If you want a class presentation, wewill work with you to design the presentation your class needs.  Please allow time to prepare.
