Cincinnati State signs contract with Middletown partner

President Owens has signed a contract with the College's partner on the Middletown project.  Here is a copy of the press release issued by the College describing the event:

Cincinnati State, HEP sign contract for Middletown project

Cincinnati State officials have signed a contract with a private partner that paves the way for the opening of classes in downtown Middletown by the start of the 2012 Fall Semester.

The agreement between Cincinnati State and HEP-CSTCC Ohio, LLC is the first of its kind in the state of Ohio. In broad terms, it is a public-private partnership that makes the College responsible for academic operations while putting HEP in charge of building renovations and certain operational aspects of the project.

“We’re tremendously excited about the opportunity to extend our presence into the Middletown community,” said Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens. “We’ve been listening carefully and we are developing a package of courses that we believe will address the educational and workforce needs of the region. We’re enthused about our partnership with HEP and the city of Middletown.’’

Cincinnati State plans to open in the former Cincinnati Gas & Electric building at 2 North Main Street in downtown Middletown. It is one of several properties donated to or otherwise acquired by the city and offered to the College.

Cincinnati State has been involved in detailed explorations about the potential of an expansion into Middletown, and last autumn Dr. Owens unveiled a proposed public-private partnership with HEP described as protecting the College from financial risk while providing a mechanism to fund the necessary renovations. The Cincinnati State Board of Trustees approved a non-binding agreement with HEP letter in September, 2011; planning has been underway since then while the parties negotiated and the Ohio Attorney General’s office reviewed a contract.

Among the highlights of the contract between Cincinnati State and HEP that has now been signed:

• HEP will be responsible for the build-out of the project, as well as the operation and maintenance of the building. (The partnership anticipates that Cincinnati State will initially utilize the first, second and parts of the sixth floors of the former CG&E building, as well as the basement.)
• Cincinnati State will be responsible for academic decisions, including the design, development and adoption of academic programs, admission of students and recruitment and selection of faculty and staff.
• HEP and Cincinnati State will make joint decisions on such matters as marketing and promotional events.
• HEP will ensure that there are sufficient funds to cover 105 percent of Cincinnati State’s direct expenses for the Middletown project. In return, HEP will be entitled to then recover its direct costs and overhead, plus a 15 percent service fee, from any net revenues that arise from the Middletown operation.

The initial term of the contract is 20 years.

HEP-CSTCC Ohio, LLC is a limited liability company affiliated with Higher Education Partners, headquartered in New Bedford, Mass. The parent organization has launched similar projects with colleges in the Northeast, and is currently in talks with schools at other locations in Ohio. As with Middletown, HEP’s other projects incorporate a significant element of urban revitalization.

Garages will be cleaned over term break

During term break, the Grounds Department will be cleaning the Ludlow Garage on Tuesday, April 10 and the Central Parkway Garage on Thursday, April 12. Each garage cleaning will begin at 5 a.m. and will be completed in time for the garage to re-open at 8 a.m. Please contact Kim Vasko, Grounds Supervisor, if you should have any questions at ext. 1560.

Bakery Hill will close over term break; Bakery Hill on Main will be open

Bakery Hill will be closing at noon on Monday, April 9 for the end of the term and will reopen on Monday, April 16 at 7:30 a.m.

Bakery Hill on Main will be open next week every day with its normal hours.

Students earn third highest score in regional competition

On Saturday, March 31 the Environmental Team from Cincinnati State participated in the Regional American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Environmental Competition, which was held this year at the University of Pittsburg.

The team included the following EVET students: John Vanderbilt (team captain); Construction Team: Amber Rehkamp, Valerie Wong, Sergey Portyanko and Paula Ayers along with the Support Team: Erin Mathias, Pavel Chukhin, Ben Sebolt, Jade Stockman, Andrew Feltner, Kinshasha “Kat” Azariah. Dr. Ann Gunkel is the faculty advisor.

The goal of the environmental competition was to develop a flow-through water treatment apparatus that removed barium and turbidity while maintaining neutral pH. The environmental team from Cincinnati State earned the 3rd highest overall score awarded. The EVET team was the only two-year school in the competition. Special thanks to Gail Quinlan for her on-campus technical support.

In addition, Kinshasha “Kat” Azariah ranked 5th in the technical paper competition (out of 21 students). The paper’s topic, assigned by ASCE, was “Ethics and Globalization.” Kat focused on building codes and the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Also, the Cincinnati State Team, which included civil and EVET students, received third place for the Spirit of Competition Award! This award is for team spirit, school spirit, integrity and following the intent and spirit of the competition. It says a lot for the students and the way that they presented themselves. The hosting school, national representative, judges and students from other schools pick the winner of this award. There were 13 schools at this year’s competition and Cincinnati State placed 6th overall!

Congratulations to everyone who participated.

Student wins OADE scholarship

Kecia Larkin, a student at Cincinnati State, has been awarded an Ohio Association for Developmental Education Scholarship. She is one of just three students from across the state to be selected for such a scholarship (valued at $350) during the 2011-12 academic year.

Kecia, a Finneytown resident, is a a graduate of the practical nursing program at the Great Oaks system, and was employed as an LPN for 20 years, specializing in the area of hemodialysis. Following a companywide round of cutbacks that cost Kecia her job, she enrolled at Cincinnati State and, when she took the COMPASS test, discovered that while she scored well in most areas, the 29 years that she had been away from math courses since high school meant she had to enroll in a DE math course at the College. She took a basic math course in autumn of 2011, earning an A. In the late fall term she took a pre-algebra course, earning a B. That set the stage for both an algebra course and health math and a decision to take a math course as an elective in the winter 2012 term.

“I now have confidence in my mathematical abilities and I am inspired to complete college leve math courses,” Kecia wrote in her scholarship application letter, noting that she hopes to pursue a BSNB and eventually an MSN and become a nurse practitioner upon graduation from Cincinnati State.

“Having had the opportunity to work in the field of nursing for many years, I understand the importance of education in having a successful career,” Kecia wrote.

In her case, as in some many, developmental education was indeed, as she put it, “the key to laying the foundation for a successful college experience.’’

New scholarship fund established

Mary Ann Davis, a part-time advisor to the AA and AS students, passed away recently. She will be very much missed by her students and by everyone who knew her.

Her colleagues have established a scholarship for an Associate of Arts or Sciences student in her memory. If you would like to make a contribution, you can send/drop off a check to Joyce Rimlinger in Room 236 Main. It should be made out to the Cincinnati State Foundation. In the memo line, write “scholarship in memory of Mary Ann Davis.” Joyce will gather the contributions and make sure that they get to the Development Office. Thank you.
