Athletic Director Theresa Check is featured speaker at AAUW event

Theresa Check, Cincinnati State's director of athletics, will be the keynote speaker at the American Association of University Women's "Girls and Sports" event on Saturday, Feb.4.

Check, who has been a fixture as a player and a coach in the Southwest Ohio area for more than 40 years, began her coaching career as head coach at Alter High School in 1975. She led the program to 122 wins and two district championships. The majority of Coach Check's career in sport administration was spent at Central State University. In 17 seasons as head coach, Check won 407 games and lost only 176 while being named the Converse/NAIA Women's Basketball Coach of the Year in 1993. In 1996, Check was named Central State's athletic director, a position she held until her retirement in 2007. Under her leadership, Central State implemented a five-year plan of growth which included the reinstatement of the football program along with the addition of tennis, volleyball, baseball, softball and bowling.

In 2008, Check was coaxed out of retirement and joined the Cincinnati State community as the director of athletics and head women's basketball coach. Upon her arrival, she took over the women's basketball program and led the Lady Surge to an overall record of 64-23, including OCCAC championships in 2009 and 2010 as well as a NJCAA National Tournament appearance in 2011. While maintaining her duties as A.D., Check announced her retirement from coaching following the 2010-2011 season.
Check is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, the American Association of University Women, and the Black Coaches Association. She is also a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame.

The AAUW focuses on advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. During her speech, Check will focus on the evolution of female participation in athletics, the experiences and challenges that female student-athletes face, and how to succesfully implement tools to increase retention rates. For more information on the AAUW, please visit http://www.aauwdaytonoh.org/home/

Central Perkway is closed; will reopen Monday as Bakery Hill on Main

Here’s some good news for anyone who works in or has occasion to pass through the front lobby of the Main Building. The coffee shop known as Central Perkway is closing, effective today, and will reopen on Monday, Feb. 6 as “Bakery Hill on Main.’’

As the new name suggests, the shop – located just to the right (south) of the Welcome Center in the first floor lobby of Main Building – will feature fresh donuts, breakfast pastries, and other pastry delights from Bakery Hill, along with Wallingford coffee and small carryout items. But that’s not the end of it. The new enterprise will also feature new varieties of those sinful cake pops and “monster-sized” chocolate chip cookies.  But don't worry, the gym is nearby, and the shop will also carry a line of eats said to be heart-healthy.

Got School Supplies?

Cincinnati State Counseling Services has partnered with the Assistance League of Greater Cincinnati to meet the needs of students. Collaboratively, we understand that many first year college students depend on grants and financial aid for their tuition, leaving little money for school supplies. In an effort to assist those who may be eligible, the Assistance League of Greater Cincinnati has donated Back-to-School Starter Kits. The Starter Kits for college students are filled with essential items such as a calculator, dictionary, flash drive, paper, pens, stapler and other basic school items.

In order to receive a kit a student must be in their first year, first term, or in their second year first term. Each term supplies are limited and will be given on a first –come, first -served basis, provided that the student is eligible to receive the kit. To apply for a Starter Kit please click the link below and complete the E-form. Once the student has been approved, the student has 10 days to claim the kit. To claim the kit the student must call 569-1552 to set up an appointment with a counselor.

Please click on this link and when it opens select “Open Hyperlink” to recommend a student for a Back to School Starter Kit.

Surge sink Sinclair – twice!

Both Cincinnati State basketball teams came away with wins over Sinclair Community College Wednesday evening.

The men won by a score of 99-70. Freshman forward Cody Martin had a game-high 19 points off the bench, while shooting 90% from the field. Martin also had 12 rebounds, which marked his sixth double-double of the season. Forward Karriem Baker also came off of the bench to contribute 12 points and 13 rebounds. Center D'Wayne Bazemore rounded out the Surge frontcourt with 12 points. Three of the Surge guards scored in double-figures led by Marquis Wilson with 17 points, followed by Anton Hutchins with 15 points and Charles Clarke with 10. Cincinnati State point guard Jazel Garrett recorded a season high 15 assists to go along with 5 steals.
With the win, Cincinnati State improves to 15-6 overall with a 4-2 record in conference play. The Surge return to action at home Saturday, Feb. 4 against Clark State. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

The Lady Surge got back to its winning ways on Wednesday night with a 79-62 conference victory over Sinclair. Coming off the first loss of the season against Vincennes on Monday night, Cincinnati State saw three players score in double figures, led by Brittiney Latimer with 18 points. Reigning conference player of the week Dominique Fischer scored 17 points and led the Surge with 7 assists. Forward Asia Dillingham recorded the only double-double of the night with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Despite having an off night offensively, Kara McLemore and Taylor Frazier provided a spark on the defensive end. McLemore finished with a game high 5 steals while Frazier led all players in blocks with 4.

Currently ranked No.2 in the NJCAA national poll with a 20-1 record and 6-0 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Association, the Lady Surge will return to action at home against the club team from the University of Dayton this Saturday, Feb. 4, followed by a match up against one of junior college's top scorers in Edison Community College's Brianna Innocent on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Cincinnati City Council committee votes to approve residential permit parking ordinance

A Cincinnati City Council committee on Tuesday voted in favor on an ordinance that would establish a residential permit parking zone for several streets near the Cincinnati State campus.

The vote came despite testimony from President O’dell M. Owens, Government and Community Relations Director Nan Cahall and several students objecting to the proposal. The ordinance would apply to Clifton Hills Avenue, Clifton Crest Terrace, Clifton Hills Terrace and portions of Ludlow Avenue and Old Ludlow Avenue between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Only residents with valid permits could park along those streets during those hours. The ordinance now goes to the full City Council for consideration.

It might snow this year. Really. Here’s the plan.

There is the possibility (however slim) of Cincinnati State closing due to inclement weather
When the weather forecast is bad, every effort will be made to determine the College’s status by 4:30 AM. The College may choose to approve a number of different options:
1. The College is closed, all classes and business offices are closed for the day
2. The College will delay its start, a specific time for the college’s business offices and classes to resume will accompany this option
3. The College has cancelled all classes, administration and staff report as scheduled
4. The College is closed, essential personnel only to report as scheduled.

Once the determination has been made, you can learn of the decision by checking the following:

• All network television stations and their radio affiliates which includes channels 9, 5, 12, 19, & 64. Radio stations are 700 and 1530 AM, and FM 93.3, 92.5, 106.5, & 95.9.
• cinci.com
• The Cincinnati State website homepage www.cincinnatistate.edu
• Faculty and Staff Intranet
• C-notify phone call

*Please update your information in MyCState so you are sure to receive a telephone message. ** For Students, Go to MyServices and click My Contacts on the MyServices for Students Menu.

This marks the third year that Cincinnati State has been selected to host the MyFreeTaxes initiative. Last year, we created a buzz around 1Economy Corporation, who sponsored the Tax Van for us, because were able to assist more than 280 internal and external community members and students. Cincinnati State has raised the bar for all 1Economy locations. This year's event, as before, is tied in with the College Goal Sunday initiative, which aims to ensure that the families of first-generation college-bound students complete their FAFSA forms .

This year organizers are anticipating a greater response to the MyFreeTaxes event and have moved the location to 130 ATLC. In addition to the service provided to students, faculty, staff and the community, organizers believe the program provides:
• A “brand” for our Accounting Technology degree and certificate program
• Help with recruitment of new students and retaining current students
• Accounting students with in-person hands on experience
• The college an opportunity to partner with the Greater Cincinnati top accounting firms to mentor our students i.e. Ernst & Young, Pricewaterhouse Group & Deloitt LLP
• Additional mentoring and co-op opportunities, and possible donations for scholarships
• Students help with completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid by the priority deadline.

Shuttle service will change at start of Winter Term 2012

The shuttle service to the Bethlehem Temple Church lot on Hamilton Avenue will end at the close of the Late Fall Term. As of the start of the 2012 Winter Term on Feb. 6, there will be no shuttle service to the Bethlehem Temple Church lot. The major reason for this change is the lack of usage by the student body and staff/faculty. We have been averaging only about 40 vehicles at this lot on any given day.

To ensure adequate parking for the 2012 Winter Term and to serve the needs of those who relied on the Hamilton Avenue parking spaces, we have entered into an lease agreement with the Church of God on Central Parkway for an additional 50 spaces. This will give us a total of 100 spaces to use, and they will be available to students as well as faculty and staff. The hours of operation of the shuttles will remain the same: Monday thru Thursday, 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., and on Friday from 7 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Any questions please call Matt Hill at 5722.

Advisor information helps students STEP Up to Semesters

A new link on the Cincinnati State Intranet page provides quick access to materials advisors can use while helping students make plans for the transition to semesters.

The link to these materials is on the lower left side of the Intranet page of MyCState; look for the Semester Transition "clock" logo.

Materials available include:
- a copy of the STEP form (Semester Transition Education Plan) that students use to document the classes they plan to take during the final three terms and after semesters begin. Two versions of the form are in use, one for students completing Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees, and another for students completing all other degrees.

- a list of all the general education courses planned for semesters, showing course titles, descriptions, and credit hour value.

- a "crosswalk" of all classes planned for semesters, showing how "old" term courses and "new" semester courses align.

Other materials on the intranet site include drafts of planned changes for College transcripts and for displaying some term-to-semester conversion information in Colleague. These information processing changes are still underway.

Please encourage all students you interact with to meet with their advisor (if they haven't done so already) and complete a written plan to STEP Up to Semesters!
