Academic All-Stars, Teams Named as Regional Competition Nears

April 6, 2010

Coaches in two of the leagues that will be represented in the April 24 Southwest Regional of the 2010 Ohio Academic Competition at Cincinnati State have selected students for the equivalent of All-Star honors.

The All-Star analogy is fitting, because the Ohio Academic Competition has much in common with a season-ending sports tournament.

For the past four months, teams of students from four leagues in southwestern Ohio – the Greater Cincinnati Academic League, the Cincinnati Academic League, the Fort Ancient Valley Conference and the Greater Miami Conference – have been matching wits in a series of weekly contests and smaller tournaments.

In sessions similar to the television game show quizzes of yore, students on these academic teams compete to see who can answer questions fastest and most accurately. The questions asked of the students range from history to literature, science to spelling, mythology to mathematics.

In addition to fielding a varsity team, most schools also assembled a reserve team and several had freshman teams as well.

When the four-month competition season came to a close at the end of February, a total of 16 schools had qualified for the Southwest Regional, which will be hosted by Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. They are:

  • Chaminade-Julienne H.S.
  • Cincinnati Country Day School
  • Clinton-Massie High School
  • Elder High School
  • Fenwick High School
  • Goshen High School
  • Lakota West High School
  • Little Miami High School
  • Loveland High School
  • Moeller High School
  • Oak Hills High School
  • Sycamore High School
  • Tri-Village High School
  • Turpin High School
  • Walnut Hills High School
  • Wilmington High School

The top two finishers in the regional will advance to the state finals in May.
