Cincinnati State advances in NJCAA tournament
March 18, 2011
The Cincinnati State Lady Surge will continue their run in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Women’s Basketball National Tournament, following their 84-79 victory Friday over Kankakee (Ill.) Community College.
Kara McLemore led Cincinnati State’s scoring with 22 points, followed by Taylor Frazier with 16. The game marked a personal triumph for Cincinnati State guard Shardai Morrison-Fountain, who recorded her 1,000th point for the Lady Surge during the game against Kankakee.
Cincinnati State was down by as many as 17 points before clawing its way back into contention against Kankakee – the third seed in the tournament and, for much of the year, the No. 1 ranked team in NJCAA Div. II.
“This was a real nice win for the school,’’ said Cincinnati State Head Coach Theresa Check, who is also the College’s athletic director.
Cincinnati State lost in the opening round of the tournament Tuesday, and has been playing since in the consolation bracket, beating North Platte (Neb.) Community College 93-80 on Thursday to set up the contest against Kankakee.
Cincinnati State is scheduled to play at 1 p.m. EST Saturday (March 19) in the finals of the consolation round against Kalamazoo (Mich.) Community College. The winner of that game will finish No. 7 in the nation, the loser No. 8.
