Cincinnati State dominates student ADDY contest

February 12, 2009

Students from the Multimedia Information Design (MID) programs at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College won 16 of the 22 student awards presented in the 2009 ADDY® Award competition sponsored by the Cincinnati Ad Club.

Cincinnati State students won Best of Show, five of the eight Gold ADDYs and 10 of the 13 Silver ADDYs presented during a ceremony Feb. 7 at Paul Brown Stadium. Entries were judged by advertising professionals from Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities.

Cincinnati State students have dominated the local ADDY competition for the past three years. Cincinnati State graphic design students won the Best of Show award in the 2007 local ADDY competition, and won Best of Show at the district level and a Gold ADDY in the 2008 national competition.

In this year’s Cincinnati Ad Club contest, the student Best of Show award and a Gold ADDY went to graphic design majors Paul Ikeler and Mike Wolfram for the Cincinnati State Disc Golf Course site. The website was created as part of the Spring 2008 capstone project required for all MID students. Both Ikeler and Wolfram graduated from the College in June 2008.

The disc golf course, known as Copperleaf at Cincinnati State, was designed and constructed by Paul DeNu, dean of the College’s Center for Innovative Technologies, in collaboration with other College personnel, particularly those in the landscaping and grounds department. The course encompasses much of the acreage adjacent to the Main Building on Cincinnati State’s Clifton campus.

The website that Ikeler and Wolfram designed not only provides information for disc golf enthusiasts, it also provides a guide to the arboretum of distinctive trees located throughout the course.

Among the other Gold ADDYs claimed by Cincinnati State students:
Alli Bacon and Adam Clayton, 2008 graduates of the graphic design program, won a Gold ADDY for a stationery package created in the Spring 2008 Capstone course for client Rosie’s Girls, an organization that provides career awareness programs for middle school girls.

Bacon and Clayton also won a Student Silver ADDY for the Rosie’s Girls brochure. In addition, Bacon was recognized as part of a team at Wondergroup that won a Professional Silver ADDY for a consumer website.

Daisuke Fukui and Jake Siemer, 2008 graduates of audio/video production, received a Gold ADDY for a promotional animation titled “Organic Growth.” They created the animation in the Early Fall 2008 Capstone course for client Toyota Production System Support Center (TSSC).

Fukui and Siemer also won a Silver ADDY for a related animation titled “Industrial Growth.”

Fukui and Siemer, along with audio/video production major Meghan O’Leary, also won a Silver ADDY for their mixed media campaign work for TSSC.

Justin Ellison, a graphic design student, won a Gold ADDY for a packaging project created in the Advanced 2D Graphics class.

Rachel Ann Taylor, a graphic design student, received a Gold ADDY for a poster created in the Digital Studio 1 class.

Three Cincinnati State graduates were part of a team that won a Gold ADDY in the professional competition. Audio/video production graduates Robert Engle and Caleb Halter, along with graphic design graduate Tim Salikov, were animators for an in-store animated video created by Lightborne.

Silver ADDY Winners

In the Student Silver ADDYs category, audio/video production majors Ben Dawson, Andy Meiners, and Courtney Moore were recognized for television spots created in the Early Fall 2008 Capstone class for client Cincinnati USA Music Heritage Foundation.

Moore also won a Silver ADDY for another Television spot created for the Music Heritage Foundation.

Other Silver ADDY winners were:
Anthony Enderle, graphic design, for packaging
Zak Lay, graphic design, for out-of-home advertising
George L. Jones, multimedia & web design, for an interactive web site.
Russell J. Singleton, graphic design, for a logo.

The Cincinnati Ad Club drew student entries from Cincinnati State, the Art Institute of Cincinnati, the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and Gateway Community and Technical College in Northern Kentucky. All Student Gold ADDY award winners at the local competition are automatically entered in the district competition, competing with students from colleges and universities in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Silver award winners may also compete at the district level if they wish.

With more than 60,000 entries annually from professionals and students, the ADDY Awards are the world's largest and arguably toughest advertising competition. The American Advertising Federation, a not-for-profit industry association, conducts the ADDY Awards through its 200 member advertising clubs and 15 districts. It is the only creative awards program administered by the advertising industry for the industry.
