Cincinnati State honors Levy, McKamey for teaching excellence
June 29, 2010
Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has presented faculty members Brad Levy and Dr. Jon P. McKamey with its House-Bruckmann Award for 2010 in recognition of excellence in teaching.
The award was presented during a recent ceremony on campus, and Levy and Dr. McKamey were recognized during Cincinnati State’s commencement ceremony June 24.
- Levy, a resident of Amberley Village, came to Cincinnati State as a student in 1995. He entered the College a construction worker planning to major in engineering technologies; he graduated with a major in mathematics and the ambition of becoming a teacher. After earning his bachelor’s degree in math from Northern Kentucky University he began teaching as an adjunct at Cincinnati State, and after earning a Master’s degree from Xavier University he was hired in 2006 as a math instructor in developmental education. Dr. Rayma Smith, Dean of the Humanities and Sciences Divisions, noted that from his earliest days as an adjunct Levy has been tutoring students in the cafeteria as part of a larger effort to cultivate a welcoming, “safe haven’’ approach to a subject that is often perceived as difficult.
- Dr. McKamey, a resident of Brookville, Indiana, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio/TV/Film and a Master’s degree in Educational Media from Indiana State University, then went on to earn a PhD in computing technology in education from Nova Southeastern University. At Cincinnati State he leads the college’s instructional support technologies program, helping faculty incorporate Blackboard and other tools to improve the learning experience for students in classroom and online settings. Dr. McKamey has also been active in the life of the college, serving on the First Year Experience Advisory Committee, Distance Learning Advisory Council, Peer Mentoring Advisory Committee, Professional Development Committee, Academic Technology Committee and the Commencement Committee, among others.
The House-Bruckmann Awards, presented annually on the basis of nominations and secret ballots by Cincinnati State faculty members, are named after Clifford House, the first president of Cincinnati Technical College, and Alice Bruckmann, a member of its first board of trustees.
