April 5, 2011

Cincinnati State’s Landscape Horticulture Technologies Department, in cooperation with the college’s Workforce Development Center, will sponsor a seminar April 15 on the use of plants to help promote the reclamation of brownfield sites.

The technical term for the process is “phytoremediation.’’ It refers to the use of plants to remove or neutralize contaminants in polluted soil or water.

Among the topics that will be discussed at the April 15 seminar:

  • Phytoremediation mechanisms and technologies
  • Cost effectiveness of various methods
  • Case studies
  • Types of brownfields
  • Soil contamination

The featured speakers are professionals with deep industry and academic experience:

  • Dan Duffy, an environmental/civil engineer, teaches landfill engineering at the University of Cincinnati, the Ohio State University and Wright State University. He has served as a project manager on civilian, military, public and private sites in 14 states and has experience in solid waste and hazardous waste disposal and management, site remediation and land development, industrial and residual waste management, environmental facility construction, environmental design and permitting, value engineering and economic analysis. He has also written articles for a variety of industry publications, including Erosion Control and Storm Water Magazines.
  • Paul Thomas is President and Owner of Thomas Consultants, and has more than 30 years experience conducting environmental characterization and remedial actions at major industrial and commercial facilities across the United States. His work has resulted in the completion of full-scale design-build remediation projects, including brownfield sites, in 17 states. Beginning in 1987 Mr. Thomas helped pioneer the practice of vegetation-based remediation and waste management, and has authored two books on phytoremediation.

The April 15 seminar will begin at 8 a.m. and last until noon. It will be held in the Lindner Auditorium (Room 2) in the Health Professions Building on the main campus of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, 3520 Central Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45223.

Cost of the seminar is $35 ($25 for current Cincinnati State students).
