The Herb Society of Greater Cincinnati (www.herbsociety.net) has awarded scholarships to three Cincinnati State students for the 2011-12 academic year. The scholarships are based on academic achievement and the recommendation of the chair of the Horticulture Program, Mark Deacon.
Here is a description of the scholarships and their recipients:
Karen Anderson, a Fairfax resident, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. She has been a student in the Sustainable Horticulture Program at Cincinnati State since the spring of 2010 and aspires to be a LEED certified consultant, specializing in sustainable horticulture expertise and working with companies or individuals in creating landscape designs that are sustainable. Karen holds a previous undergraduate degree in biology and had a career in graphic design. She is currently completing an internship at Xavier University in their grounds department and will continue there as a seasonal employee.
Kris Barton, a Fort Thomas, Ky., resident, was awarded a $1,500 scholarship. She has been a student in Cincinnati State’s Landscape Horticulture Technologies Program since the fall of 2008 and is also completing a double major in Sustainable Horticulture. She hopes to graduate by early fall of 2011. Kris was awarded a scholarship from us last year. She continues to be self-employed in a landscape consulting service to homeowners under the business name, “The Garden Coach”, and has been incorporating the skills learned in her stormwater management classes in her landscape designs. Kris has recently taken a part-time position at Geraci Garden Center and Landscaping in Sharonville, Ohio
Alex Benoit, a Milford resident, was awarded a $750 scholarship. He has been a student in the Landscape Horticulture Technologies Program since the fall term of 2009 and has a double major in Turfgrass Management. He hopes to graduate August of 2011. Alex has worked at Hickory Woods Golf Course in Loveland for the past six years and this past fall was employed at Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum for four months. His career goals include acquiring a master’s degree in horticulture and eventually teaching at a community college. Additionally, he is working toward certification as an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and as a Professional Grounds Management Society Grounds Technician as well as working to obtain an Ohio Pesticide License and Ohio Class B CDL.
