April 20, 2009
Two of the top teams in the Southwest Regional of the Ohio Academic Competition – Mason High School on the left, Cincinnati Country Day on the right – squared off Saturday at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Serving as taskmaster for this round of the tournament was Cincinnati State faculty member Edward Sunderhaus, standing. Cody Clark, a volunteer from the University of Cincinnati, monitored the clock.
Teams from 16 high schools participated in the regional competition hosted by Cincinnati State. The Walnut Hills team finished first, followed by Cincinnati Country Day and Mason. Other schools in the Southwest Regional competition were Batavia, Bethel Tate, Carroll, Chaminade-Julienne, Little Miami, Mercy, Milford, Moeller, New Richmond, St. Xavier, Sycamore, Turpin and Wyoming.
The top two finishers from each of the six regional competitions will move on to the state tournament in Columbus on May 2.
The competitions leading up to the regional and statewide tournaments have been underway for the past five months. Cincinnati State has hosted many of those held in the Southwest Region. In addition to Sunderhaus, who has been spearheading the program, volunteers from Cincinnati State include Peggy Rolfsen, Terry Endres, David Brown, Rose Curtin, Tom Kober, Geoff Woolf, Maggie Davis, Scott Freeman, Alicia Revely and David Smith.
