Hispanic Chamber awards scholarships to two students
December 21, 2009
The Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA has awarded academic scholarships to two students at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.
The scholarships were presented at a recent gala dinner featuring an address by Peru’s ambassador to the United States, Luis M. Valdivieso.
The scholarships were awarded to:
- Carlos Osores, a native of Peru who now lives in Fairfield. After earning a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Ricardo Palma University in Lima, Peru, Carlos came to the United States alone to pursue a graduate degree. He found himself earning a living as a general laborer, however, while he learned English in free schools. In 2007 he enrolled in Cincinnati State’s construction management program, working as a laborer and taking classes part-time. (Some of his credits from his college courses in Peru have transferred toward the degree requirements at Cincinnati State.) At present he is completing work on his associate’s degree and preparing to take the GRE exam, with plans to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering at the University of Cincinnati.
- Jazzhil S. Echeverria Mendez, a native of southern Mexico, who also lives in Fairfield. She moved to California as a young girl with her family and eventually to Cincinnati. Jazzhil is currently in her second year at Cincinnati State, majoring in International Trade Management. In addition to carrying a full course load, Jazzhil, a single mother, is working full-time for a company in West Chester.
The scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, were among approximately half a dozen awarded by the Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA during the 2009 gala.
“We are tremendously honored by the recognition given our students by the Hispanic Chamber,’’ said Dr. John Henderson, interim president of Cincinnati State.
“Carlos and Jazzhil, like so many of our students here, have a tremendous work ethic, and it’s wonderful to see them get this recognition from such an important institution,’’ Dr. Henderson said.
