Ceremony recognizes House-Bruckmann honorees, emeritus faculty

May 19, 2009

House-Bruckmann AwardsEvery year Cincinnati State Technical and Community College honors faculty members with its House-Bruckmann awards, to recognize distinguished classroom performance and service to the College.

The 2009 winners are Meg Clark and Larry Feist.

Meg, a faculty member in the Business Technologies Division, has been at Cincinnati State since 1991, teaching evening students as an adjunct before she was hired full-time in 2001. In addition to teaching finance and other traditional courses, she has worked extensively with the Tech Prep program and developed four online courses.

“She approaches every task with the enthusiasm and desire to do it the best it can be done,’’ said Donna DuVall, Associate Dean of the Business Technologies Division, who introduced Meg at the May 18 ceremony. “Meg is one who never gives up.’’

DuVall noted that Meg consistently receives positive reviews from her students.

“Miss Clark’s classes are high energy, and her enthusiasm is contagious,’’ one student wrote.

“Thanks so much,’’ another wrote. “I may even take another finance class!’’

Meg told her colleagues that her approach in the classroom relies on two concepts: creative problem-solving and tough love.

Feist, a Cincinnati State graduate, is currently chair of the renewable energy program at Cincinnati State’s Center for Innovative Technologies.
According to Paul DeNu, Dean of the Center for Innovative Technologies, under the leadership of Feist and his colleagues, Cincinnati State has become “the leader when it comes to renewable energy and sustainable design.’’

Feist told his colleagues he started his academic career with a desire to be an artist, but was advised (in no uncertain terms) by his family to seek a more practical way of supporting himself. So he switched to engineering and industrial design – and a career that eventually led him back to Cincinnati State as a teacher.

“I’ve always had an environmental passion,’’ he said. “I wanted to find a way to put my engineering background toward it.’’
The House-Bruckmann awards are named after Clifford House, the first president of Cincinnati Technical College, and Alice Bruckmann, a member of its first board of trustees.

The May 18 program also included recognition of five persons who have been awarded faculty emeritus status at Cincinnati State: Marc Baskind, Joan Jackson, Mike Jones, Pat Morganroth and Paul Olubas.
