Landscape Horticulture Team Competes Successfully

Students, faculty and staff members in the Landscape Horticulture Program recently traveled to metro Atlanta to attend the Professional Landcare Network’s 34th Annual Student Career Days competition.
Cincinnati State’s team placed 15th out of 67 from schools across the country competing in the event, which was hosted by Chattahoochee Technical College. Most teams were from universities with four-year landscape programs; of those that finished ahead of Cincinnati State, only two were from community colleges.
Among the individual highlights for Cincinnati State students:
- Bob Emmitt placed third in both the Pest Identification and Turf and Turf Pest Identification contests.
- Teammate Zac Christman placed second overall in the Skid Steer Competition.
- Josh Bearman and Alex Benoit placed fifth in the Arboriculture Techniques Competition.
- Bearman finished seventh in Small Engines.
- First- year student McCall Dillon came in 11th in the Safety Management Competition.
- Nikol Soluski placed 12th in Woody Plant Identification.
While the weather was for the most part perfect, students endured “fogs” of pine pollen when competing in outside events.
Students participating in this year’s event were Jereme Barnes, Josh Bearman, Alex Benoit, Eric Bosler, Lindsay Buttrill, Tim Christie, Tyler Davis, McCall Dillon, Robert Emmitt, Chase Hering, Kevin Noonan, Scott Roberts, Josh Schulte, Zac Christman, Robin Shehan, and Nikol Soluski. They were accompanied by Elke Hartman, Heather Wiggins, Joe Roberts, and Mark Deacon.
In all, 815 students participated in this year’s competition. This was an international event, with a team from Canada and one from England.
