Ohio, Indiana tuition agreement takes effect today
July 2, 2009
Southeastern Indiana residents will be able to enroll in most programs at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College at in-state rates, thanks to a new tuition reciprocity agreement.
The agreement, which took effect July 1, is part of a larger reciprocity package negotiated by higher education officials involving 14 schools in Ohio and six in Indiana.
The goal of the tuition agreement is to expand educational opportunities and spare taxpayers in both states needless duplication of educational facilities and efforts.
Among other things, the agreement means that residents of Dearborn County, Indiana, (which takes in Lawrenceburg) may enroll in most Cincinnati State courses and pay tuition at the same rate as Ohio residents. However, nursing programs at Cincinnati State (and at most of the participating institutions in Ohio and Indiana) are excluded.
In addition to Dearborn County, the agreement covers residents of Ripley, Ohio, Franklin and Switzerland counties in Indiana, along with Adams, Allen, Blackford, Clark, Decatur, Delaware, Fayette, Henry, Jay, Jefferson, Jennings, Randolph, Rush, Scott, Union, Wayne and Wells counties.
The participating Ohio schools, other than Cincinnati State, include the University of Cincinnati and its Clermont College in Batavia and Raymond Walters College in Blue Ash; Miami University’s Hamilton and Middletown branches; Sinclair Community College in Dayton and its campus in Warren County; Clark State Community College; Owens Community College; Rhodes State College; Wright State University and its Lake Campus.
The potential savings for Indiana residents is significant. In-state tuition at Cincinnati State, for example, is $80.20, while residents outside Ohio are charged double that amount.
Approximately 160 Indiana residents are currently enrolled at Cincinnati State.
The new tuition reciprocity agreement with Indiana is similar to one already in place for Northern Kentucky residents. It allows students from Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Bracken, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant and Pendleton Counties in Kentucky to enroll in most Cincinnati State programs at in-state tuition rates. The same agreement allows graduates of Cincinnati State who live in Hamilton, Butler, Clermont and Warren counties in Ohio to enroll at Northern Kentucky University and pay in-state tuition for most programs.
Similarly, the tuition reciprocity agreement with Indiana allows students from select Ohio counties to enroll in certain Indiana schools and pay in-state rates for most programs. The Ohio counties are Butler, Darke, Mercer, Preble, Shelby and Van Wert. Students in those counties may attend Ball State University, Indiana University East, Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana Region 6 and Region 9, and the Purdue University College of Technology campuses in Muncie and Richmond.
