Striking AAUP members return to classrooms at Cincinnati State

September 30, 2011

Striking members of the Cincinnati State chapter of the American Association of University Professors returned to the classroom today, ending a walkout that began Sept. 23.

Cincinnati State and the AAUP have not reached agreement on a new contract. The approximately 200 faculty members represented by the AAUP will be working under terms of the old contract, which expired Sept. 5.

No new bargaining sessions are scheduled at present.

President O’dell M. Owens greeted full-time faculty members who gathered at the front entrance of the College prior to the start of classes Friday.

He also sent a letter Thursday to staff, administrators and adjunct faculty who worked during the strike, thanking them for teaching classes and providing services to students and enabling the college to operate as normally as possible. To see it, please visit xxx xxx.

Here is a timeline of key events to date:

  • Negotiations began May 16.
  • After 13 bargaining sessions failed to produce an agreement, the AAUP asked that a fact-finder be appointed to issue a report and recommendations. On Aug. 29 both sides presented 24 unresolved issues to Felicia Bernardini, the Fact-Finder appointed by the State Employment Relations Board.
  • Bernardini issued her report and recommendations on Sept. 12. On that date, the AAUP served notice of its intention to strike in 10 days.
  • On Sept. 14 the Cincinnati State Board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept the Bernardini’s recommendations.
  • On Sept. 15 the AAUP voted 169-11 to reject the fact-finder’s report.
  • The most recent negotiating session was held Sept. 22.
  • On Sept. 23, the AAUP commenced the strike.
  • On Sept. 30, AAUP members returned to the classroom.

The AAUP represents about 200 full-time faculty members at Cincinnati State; the college also employs about 575 adjuncts and approximately 325 administrative/staff workers.
