Cincinnati State’s gymnasium will be rocking this weekend

(11/22/11) On Saturday (Nov. 26), ten of the best girl’s high school teams in the city will gather at Cincinnati State to participate in the Cincinnati Sports Medicine Girls’ Basketball Shootout. The fifth annual Shootout includes teams from Oak Hills, Princeton, Hamilton, Sycamore and Lakota East from the Greater Miami Conference, and Alter, Mercy, Seton, Ursuline and McAuley from the Girls Greater Catholic League. Part of the excitement surrounding this year’s event centers around a Princeton player, Kelsey Mitchell, who is regarded as one of the top potential recruits in the nation when she graduates in 2014, and Mercy’s Hall of Fame coach Mary Jo Huismann, who won her 600th game as head coach last season. Mercy and Princeton are scheduled to square off at 1:45 p.m. Saturday. Read more

Cincinnati State appoints new Human Resources executive

(11/22/11) Lisa May Evans has been named to the new position of Director of Organizational Development & Legal Compliance at Cincinnati State. In this role, she will lead the college’s Human Resources team in the development of labor and employee relations initiatives that support the achievement of Cincinnati State’s strategic goals and objectives. Ms. Evans comes to Cincinnati State with more than 16 years experience as a human resources executive and corporate labor and employment law attorney. Her human resources experience includes serving as Vice President, Human Resources with d. e. Foxx & Associates, and Director, Supply Chain Human Resources with Sara Lee Corporation. Read more

Carla Chance is new Executive V.P. at Cincinnati State

(11/18/11) Carla Chance is the newly appointed Executive Vice President at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, providing leadership for human resources, student services, technology, facilities and security. Ms. Chance previously served as Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business Services at St. Louis Community College from October 1999 to November 2011. There she was responsible for budget management, physical facilities, auxiliary services, financial resources management, and procurement. STLCC is a comprehensive urban community college serving almost 30,000 credit students and more than 90,000 continuing education and workforce enrollees annually. The STLCC system is comprised of four campuses, two extension centers and a downtown training center. “Carla has the mix of qualities that I was looking for,’’ added Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens. “Moreover, she’s originally from this area, and she knows the turf around here.’’ Ms. Chance succeeds Dr. Carolyn Anderson, who recently retired. Read more

Berke family donates home for occupational therapy program

(11/10/11) Eileen Berke and members of her family gathered recently at a home on Ludlow Avenue in Clifton for a quiet ceremony to sign papers deeding the property to Cincinnati State Technical and Community College for use as a real-world instructional laboratory for Occupational Therapy Assistant students. The structure, located directly across from the Cincinnati State campus in Clifton, will be known as the Eileen Berke Occupational Therapy Center. The home will be used by students and faculty in Cincinnati State’s regionally-renowned Occupational Therapy Assistant program to demonstrate how to train individuals to live independently as they recover from a stroke or other debilitating disease, injury or illness. Cincinnati State licenses aviation weather station in Harrison

(11/8/11) Cincinnati State has just received its license to operate a new aviation weather station that was recently installed at the Cincinnati West Airport in Harrison. Known as AWOS, for Automated Weather Observation System, it reports cloud height, visibility, temperature, dew point and other weather conditions over an aircraft radio frequency used by pilots. The radio signal extends between 40 and 60 miles from the Harrison airport, depending on altitude on the plane. The system also makes this information – which is updated every minute – available to pilots as a telephone voice recording. Read more

Cincinnati State trustees ratify new contract with full-time faculty

(11/3/11) The Cincinnati State Board of Trustees today ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with the union representing about 200 full-time faculty members. The unanimous vote came during a special meeting this morning. It follows a 136-15 vote Wednesday by the Cincinnati State chapter of the American Association of University Professors to approve the agreement, which will govern wages, benefits and a variety of labor/management relationships for the next three years. “Today represents the ability of the whole College to move forward and focus our energies on our most precious asset – our students,’’ said Cathy Crain, chair of the Cincinnati State Board of Trustees. Cincinnati State Board of Trustees will meet on Nov. 3

(11/1/11) The Board of Trustees of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is scheduled to meet at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 in the Conference Center, Rooms 344-346 Main Building, on the main campus at 3520 Central Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45223. The board is expected to consider a proposed collective bargaining agreement with full-time faculty members represented by the Cincinnati State chapter of the American Association of University Professors. Bargaining teams representing Cincinnati State and the AAUP have reached tentative agreement on a new contract. That agreement must now be put to a vote by the AAUP membership and the Cincinnati State Board of Trustees.

Charlene Barnett McDaniel wins Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award

(11/1/11) The Ohio Association of Two Year Colleges has presented a Cincinnati State instructor, Charlene Barnett McDaniel, with its 2011 Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award. McDaniel, a Liberty Township resident who has taught at Cincinnati State for 16 years, was presented the award during recent ceremonies hosted by Rhodes State College in Lima, Ohio. Thirty-two faculty members were nominated by their respective institutions for the top teacher awards, one for a full-time faculty member and the other for an adjunct faculty member. McDaniel teaches developmental education (writing) at Cincinnati State, along with a variety of writing courses that range from Basic Writing I to English Composition III. She has also taught in the First Year Experience and TRIO programs, and has worked in Cincinnati State’s Writing Center with traditional and online instructional sequences. Read more

Bourbon will be featured at Nov. 12 Culinary Theater event at Summit Restaurant

(10/31/11) The Summit Restaurant at Cincinnati State will be honoring bourbon on Nov. 12 with a Culinary Theatre event. Chef Robert Coltrane has not only prepared a menu of foods cooked with bourbon or that pair well with bourbon, he and the team at the Midwest Culinary Institute have also assembled a panel of experts who will discuss its history, its production processes and the reasons it is now enjoying a resurgence in popularity. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. in the Midwest Culinary Institute’s Demonstration Theater with a bourbon tasting, a cooking demonstration and a panel discussion featuring representatives from several of the nation’s leading distillers. Cincinnati State trustees to meet Nov. 1 in regular session

(10/24/11) The Board of Trustees of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is scheduled to meet at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1 in the Conference Center, Rooms 344-346 Main Building, on the main campus at 3520 Central Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45223. Bargaining session held at Cincinnati State, another scheduled

(10/20/11) Negotiating teams from Cincinnati State and the College’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors met for approximately four hours Thursday, and agreed to meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Today’s session began about 4 p.m. and ended at 8 p.m. The most recent contract between Cincinnati State and the AAUP expired Sept. 5. AAUP members conducted a week-long strike from Sept. 23-Sept. 30. They have been working since then under terms of the old contract. Read more

Cincinnati State receives federal funds to continue outreach to adults

(10/19/11) Cincinnati State is among six educational institutions in Ohio to win funding under the U.S. Education Department’s TRIO Educational Opportunity Centers program. Cincinnati State was awarded $230,000, according to an announcement by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown. “Ohio’s impressive network of community colleges and universities play an integral role in connecting displaced workers, veterans, and working Ohioans with the resources needed to earn a college degree,’’ Sen. Brown said in a release. Bari Ewing, Director of College Access Programs for Cincinnati State, noted that many of those served by the EOC are the first in their families to attempt to attend college. Contract talks held at Cincinnati State, another session set Thursday

(10/18/11) Members of the bargaining teams representing Cincinnati State and the College’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors met for approximately five hours Monday. Both sides agreed to another negotiating session starting at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20. Today’s session began about 2:30 p.m. and ended shortly after 7:30 p.m. Negotiations between Cincinnati State and the AAUP began May 16. Read more

College named recipient of $500,000 donation in memory of Rev. Shuttlesworth

(10/14/11) Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens announced today a $500,000 donation to the college from Dick Weiland in memory of the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. The funds will be earmarked for the “Dick Weiland Endowed Scholars Program in Honor of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.” Weiland is the founder and president of Richard Consulting Corporation, which provides lobbying and mediation skills to more than 60 companies and numerous nonprofit organizations. He has also pledged to lead a fund drive with the goal of raising another $1 million or more to be used toward the Shuttlesworth Endowed Scholars Program. “We are deeply touched by Dick’s generous gift in memory of Rev. Shuttlesworth,’’ said Dr. Owens. “What a perfect way to honor the legacy of a man who spent his life fighting to open doors for people to receive these kinds of opportunities.” Dr. Owens said the funds would be used to pay for scholarships for deserving students from targeted communities. He said the college plans to structure the scholarship program in a way that involves community leaders as well as Cincinnati State administrators and applicants. Dr. Owens and Weiland also said they anticipate exploring other initiatives involving health care and hunger if fund-raising for the program is successful. Read more

Doug Bowling named dean of Center for Innovative Technologies

(10/12/11) Doug Bowling has been appointed Dean of Cincinnati State’s Center for Innovative Technologies. Bowling received his BS in materials science and engineering from Wright State University and an MS in materials science and engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He began his career working for Wright Patterson Air Force Base performing testing in the area of battle damage repair of composites. From there he went on to the University of Cincinnati as manager of college laboratories for the Materials Science and Engineering Department. In this role he managed all instructional and research laboratory facilities within the department; supervised department support and operations staff in technical, service, and academic areas; and provided all facility, safety, and equipment training. Contract talks held at Cincinnati State; another session planned

(10/11/11) Negotiators for Cincinnati State and the College’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors met for more than three hours Tuesday. No agreement was reached, but both sides agreed to another negotiating session Monday, Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m. James Lawrence, an attorney representing Cincinnati State, said the college put forth a new offer concerning workload and other issues. Tuesday’s session, called by mediator Earl Leonhardt, began about 4:30 p.m. and ended at approximately 7:50 p.m. It was the first since Sept. 22. Read more

Bargaining session set for Oct. 11 between Cincinnati State, AAUP

(10/10/11) Representatives of Cincinnati State’s bargaining team and the Cincinnati State chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) are scheduled to meet for a bargaining session with a mediator Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 4:30 p.m. The most recent contract expired Sept. 5. AAUP members conducted a week-long strike from Sept. 23-Sept. 30. They have been working since then under terms of the old contract.

Cincinnati State joins celebration of Faculty Club partnership at UC

(10/6/11) Officials from the Cincinnati Faculty Club, Inc., the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati State celebrated the formal launch of a new partnership between the three organizations Wednesday, Oct. 5. The Faculty Club – an independent organization that provides dining, meeting and other services to members and guests on the UC campus – has contracted with Cincinnati State’s Midwest Culinary Institute to operate the facility. The agreement stipulates that students from both UC and Cincinnati State will be employed in co-op or work-study positions at the Faculty Club, working both in the kitchens and in the front of the house. “We structured this into a pathway, both in the front of the house and the back of the house,’’ said Richard E. Friedman, president of the Cincinnati Faculty Club Board of Governors. Read more

Cincinnati State to offer courses to TSA personnel in Kentucky

(10/5/11) Cincinnati State has received permission to begin offering security management training courses at the federal Transportation Security Administration’s offices in Erlanger. In a letter to Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education said the college could begin teaching courses as an out-of-state institution at the TSA offices. These courses will be made available to all TSA agents in the region served by the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky International Airport, as part of their ongoing continuing education program. Cincinnati State student, instructor elected to Astronomical Society board

(10/4/11) Cincinnati State Writing Center Manager Terry Endres has been elected to his third consecutive term as president of the Cincinnati Astronomical Society. During the society’s recent annual elections, Nathan Mantia, a Cincinnati State student, was elected to a three-year term as a trustee of the organization. The Cincinnati Astronomical Society is in the midst of celebrating its 100th year, and is among the oldest astronomy groups in the nation. It is dedicated to public outreach and schedules numerous educational events throughout the year. Read more

Cincinnati State student aces American Chemical Society exam

(10/3/11) Josh Rockey, a second-year student at Cincinnati State, has achieved a perfect score on the American Chemical Society General Chemistry Exam. The examination has been given to over 500 students in universities, colleges and two-year institutions since this summer to determine their achievement in freshman chemistry. Chemistry apparently isn’t the only scientific field for which Rockey has an aptitude. He scored in the 99.9th percentile in the national PCAT, a national entrance test for pharmacy school applicants. Read more

Striking AAUP members return to classrooms at Cincinnati State

(9/30/11) Striking members of the Cincinnati State chapter of the American Association of University Professors returned to the classroom today, ending a walkout that began Sept. 23. Cincinnati State and the AAUP have not reached agreement on a new contract. The approximately 200 faculty members represented by the AAUP will be working under terms of the old contract, which expired Sept. 5. No new bargaining sessions are scheduled at present. Read more

Cincinnati State Trustees approve Middletown agreement

(9/29/11) The Cincinnati State Board of Trustees has approved an agreement that could pave the way for development of a campus in Middletown. Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens and members of his administrative team presented a financial plan to the Board on Tuesday (Sept. 27) that envisions a collaboration with a Boston-based company, Higher Education Partners (HEP). Under the proposal, HEP would be responsible for build-out of the campus, lease and operating payments, equipment purchases and other operational details while the College would have primary responsibility for programming and curriculum development, staffing and academic operations. Cincinnati State, partners win $19.6 million health training grant

(9/27/11) Cincinnati State learned Monday that it will be the lead partner with nine other community colleges across the country in a $19.6 million federal workforce training grant that targets the health professions. The grant was announced Monday by the U.S. Department of Labor, as part of a $500 million round of workforce training awards to community colleges by the Obama administration.  “This award is a wonderful testament to the great work already being done by our college and will be a great help in achieving my first priority, to enhance our student success,’’ said Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens. “My plan for every student coming to Cincinnati State is that he or she will leave with at least one credential and the 21st Century skills wanted by employers locally, and nationally.”  Part of the impetus for the Cincinnati State grant came from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as a result of its research into a pioneering health workforce training program launched in Cincinnati. That program, known as the Health Careers Collaborative, has seen Cincinnati State, hospitals and other organizations in the area work together to help individuals get the training they need to land jobs or improve their chances for promotion if they already have jobs. College will operate normally Monday; students should report to classes

(9/25/11) The Board of Trustees and College Administration have been working for months to ensure that classes continue as seamlessly as possible in the unfortunate event of a strike. While this week will be a bit out of the ordinary, with some replacement faculty, students are not in jeopardy of failing to complete courses this term. The Board is committed to excellent faculty, which includes full-time and adjunct instructors. Approximately 200 out of 784 faculty members have chosen to go on strike. The rest of Cincinnati State’s faculty are expected to remain on the job, teaching in classrooms. Nothing will change in those classes. Read more

Trustees seek responsible workload, fiscal balance

(9/23/11) The chairman of the Cincinnati State Board of Trustees expressed disappointment Friday that the union representing full-time faculty chose to begin the first strike in the history of the college, and said the administration’s offer concerning workload was reasonable. Board chairman Michael Oestreicher also said the College would continue to operate normally while the strike is in progress. Read more

White House says Cincinnati State is a “Champion of Change”

(9/21/11) Dr. Monica Posey, Academic Vice President at Cincinnati State, was among a group of panelists from across the country invited to participate in a White House roundtable discussion today (Wednesday, Sept. 21) concerning the contributions of community colleges to the nation’s economy. Each week, the White House said in a release, the administration highlights “Champions of Change” who are “making an impact in their communities and helping America rise to meet the challenges of the 21st century.” It said Dr. Posey and Cincinnati State were being recognized for their “clear focus on career development, creating pathways to employment for students.” Read more

Classroom will be focus of Cincinnati State inauguration events

(9/19/11) The classroom will be the focus of activities surrounding the inauguration of Dr. O’dell M. Owens as the fifth president of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Events are planned in Harrison, Middletown and at the main campus in Clifton from Wednesday, Sept. 21 through Friday, Sept. 23. The inauguration itself will take place from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the gymnasium at the main campus. Aside from the investiture, the signature event is a reception designed to raise funds for scholarships and promote the range of Cincinnati State’s academic offerings. Titled “1 Life, 12 Classrooms’’ and supported by presenting sponsor US Bank, it will be held from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 in a variety of locations in the Advanced Technology & Learning Center and the Health Professions Building. Institute for Social Media adds new members to Advisory Committee

(9/16/11) The Institute for Social Media at Cincinnati State has added six new members to its Advisory Committee. The committee includes individuals whose expertise spans social media, business, public, private and non-profit organizations. Members are charged with helping to direct the Institute’s certification programming; they also provide guidance regarding the overall program, the evolving curriculum, and Institute membership based on College, community, and business needs. Cincinnati State trustees vote to accept Fact-Finder’s report

(9/14/11) The Cincinnati State Board of Trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to accept a Fact-Finder’s report concerning collective bargaining issues with the union representing full-time faculty members. “We felt that the Fact-Finder worked hard to achieve a fair compromise,” said Michael Oestreicher, chairman of the Board of Trustees. “After discussing it in depth with senior administrators, the board concluded that although some of her recommendations present financial and institutional challenges, accepting the overall compromise she proposed is in the best interest of the College and the community.” Representatives of the administration and the Cincinnati State chapter of the American Association of University Professors have been in contract negotiations since May 16, and presented 24 unresolved issues to independent fact-finder Felicia Bernardini on Aug. 29. The most recent contract, a three-year agreement, expired Sept. 5. Faculty members have been working since then under terms of the old contract. Read more

Scholarship Golf Outing will benefit Cincinnati State students

(8/19/11) Friends of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will tee up Monday, Sept. 19 at the Western Hills Country Club to raise funds for student scholarships. In years past this event has funded scholarships for more than 50 Cincinnati State students. Even though Cincinnati State’s tuition is about half that of other schools in the region, approximately 70 percent of its students require financial assistance. Read more

Cincinnati State president to participate in Energy & Economic Summit

(8/15/11) Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens is scheduled to participate in the “Ohio Governor’s 21st Century Energy & Economic Summit” next month in Columbus. Organizers report the two-day summit, to be held Sept. 21-22 at The Ohio State University, will be built around themes critical to developing an energy policy that supports long-term economic growth and job creation. More than 75 industry, environmental, and policy leaders have been invited to present their viewpoints to members of Gov. John Kasich’s administration and other Ohio policymakers. Read more

Cincinnati State names Ron Harris to lead women’s basketball team in 2011-12

(8/11/11) After leading the Cincinnati State Lady Surge to the NJCAA national tournament last season, Theresa Check has decided to step down from coaching and focus on her duties as Director of Athletics. Cincinnati State President Dr. O’dell M. Owens has named associate head coach Ron Harris to lead the women’s basketball program on an interim basis for the 2011-12 season. Harris has been associated with the Cincinnati State program since 2006, and has served as Check's assistant and director of recruiting since her arrival at the college in 2008. Together, Check and Harris led the Lady Surge to back-to-back Ohio Community College Athletic Conference championships in 2009 and 2010 and the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XII championship and the national tournament in the 2010-11 season. Preview Party for “Queen City,” the new reality series about four young Cincinnati women

(7/19/11) “Queen City” kicks into high gear this week to promote the show premiering 11 p.m. Sunday on WXIX-TV (Channel 19). The Thursday screening at Cincinnati State Cincinnati Technical and Community College, which is producing the half-hour reality show, is at 6:30 PM. All four stars — Tracey Conrad, Adhrucia Apana, Lauren Brown and Katie Cassidy — 4 well known young philanthropists, have been invited to the screening in the second-floor ATLC Auditorium (Advanced Technology & Learning Center) at the school, 3520 Central Parkway, The reception starts at 5:30 p.m. with “lite bites and cash bar.” Cincinnati State President Dr. O’dell Owens, Executive producer and director Paul Grundy, the Cincinnati State video production manager, and his staff & student TV team will also be there too. Seating is limited to 230, says Jean Manning, Cincinnati State Vice President of Marketing and Communications. Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens is now an Ohio Commodore

(7/7/11) Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens has been inducted into the Association of Ohio Commodores. The Association of Ohio Commodores is a group of individuals recognized by the Governor of Ohio with one of the state’s most distinguished honors, The Executive Order of the Ohio Commodore, for their business accomplishment, acumen, and leadership. Dr. Owens was one of 16 people from around Ohio who were inducted in the 2011 summer ceremony as new members of the Association. “As the president of a community college dedicated to training men and women to become productive participants in the workforce, I am particularly proud of this honor,’’ Dr. Owens said, following the recent summer induction ceremony at The Ohio State University’s Faculty Club. Cincinnati State's Jake Jones wins NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award

(7/1/11) Jake Jones, a member of the nationally-ranked Cincinnati State men's soccer team the past two years, was named today (Thursday, June 30) as a winner of a 2011 Academic Student-Athlete Award by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Jones, who graduated Magna Cum Laude earlier this month from Cincinnati State, helped lead the Surge to the NJCAA Finals this past season. The team finished second in the national tournament. Cincinnati State becomes authorized provider of IACET CEUs

(6/28/11) The International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) has formally awarded “Authorized Provider” status to Cincinnati State. IACET Authorized Providers are the only organizations approved to offer IACET Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Cincinnati State will promote renewable energy at Kids Expo

(6/22/11) Cincinnati State will be among the many exhibitors at the 2011 “Kids Outdoor Adventure Expo” Thursday, June 23 at Coney Island.The Kids Outdoor Adventure Expo, a prelude to the upcoming Paddlefest on the Ohio River, is a volunteer effort designed to introduce children to water sports, water safety, natural science, environmental awareness and an appreciation of Greater Cincinnati’s waterways. The Cincinnati State booths, organized by Larry Feist, chair of the renewable energy program at the College, will feature hands-on activities designed to introduce students to different aspects of renewable energy. One, for example, features a working windmill. Another has a solar array that lights different types of light bulbs. Another demonstrates the use of a kilowatt meter to measure electrical energy consumption. Read more

Cincinnati State to host Summer Leadership Summit this week

(6/20/11) Cincinnati State is hosting a three-day Summer Leadership Summit this week designed to bolster the skills of high school students and help craft approaches for reducing the number of teen dropouts. The Summit is unusual in that it will be heavily student-focused, involving many of the students from Upward Bound, Gear Up and Project Grad programs who are spending their summer at Cincinnati State in a variety of day programs for college-bound high school students. Cincinnati State golf team finishes 3rd in NJCAA D-III National Tournament

(6/10/11) The Cincinnati State golf team recorded its best finish in the program’s history today, placing third out of 13 teams in the National Junior College Athletic Association D-III National Tournament at Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, New York. Cincinnati State had entered the final day Friday with a three-stroke lead over Monroe Community College (NY). But the two-time defending champions from Monroe shot a tournament team score low of 294, and a four-day total of 1,216 strokes, as they ran away from the Surge and everyone else in the fourth and final round. Diane Hopper named Director of Development at Cincinnati State

(6/8/11) Diane Hopper has been appointed Director of Development at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. An attorney with a background in commercial and employment litigation, Hopper worked as an institutional fund raiser for more than a decade before joining Cincinnati State. “I’m delighted to have someone with Diane’s blend of development background, legal skills and energy,’’ said Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Partnership will boost job-oriented education in Warren County

(6/2/11) Warren County Career Center Adult Education and Cincinnati State Technical and Community College are partnering to help students interested in careers in the electric power industry. The two institutions will offer “one plus one” programs that marry the WCCC’s career training programs in advanced electrical occupations with those at Cincinnati State leading to an Associate of Technical Studies in electrical power technology. The partnership gives students in Greater Cincinnati’s northern suburbs the advantage of taking their first year at WCCC, seeking industry certification as an electrical power line mechanic or as an electromechanical-PLC technician and gaining workforce skills. Then those students would apply those credits toward a second year of study at Cincinnati State, which would lead to not only an associate degree but, through the College’s co-op program, additional job experience as well. (5/25/11) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has presented faculty members David Killen and Robert Eveslage with its 2011 House/Bruckmann Awards for teaching excellence. The House-Bruckmann Awards are given annually on the basis of nominations and secret ballots by Cincinnati State faculty members. Cincinnati State’s 2011 ArtsWave campaign sets school record

(5/9/11) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College raised more than $14,000 for the 2011 ArtsWave Campaign, President O’dell M. Owens reported today. As important as the dollar amount, he said, was the participation rate, which this year reached 27.5 percent. That is nearly triple Cincinnati State’s 9.8 percent average participation rate over the past five years. “A thriving arts environment creates unexpected benefits to everyone in the community and is an essential element of a healthy and vibrant region,” Dr. Owens said, in a letter to Cincinnati State students, faculty and staff. Cincinnati State’s Spring Term enrollment sets all-time record

(5/5/11) Cincinnati State’s enrollment has reached a new Spring Term record, President O’dell M. Owens announced today. As of the close of the official reporting period for the 2011 Spring Term, which began April 18, enrollment stood at 10,901. That represents an increase of 2.3 percent over the same period in 2010. “This is an encouraging development on several levels,’’ Dr. Owens said. “It shows that the good news about Cincinnati State is starting to get out. Cincinnati State will host Naturalization Ceremony on Friday, May 6

(5/3/11) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will host a naturalization ceremony on Friday, May 6 from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in its Conference Center (Room 342, Main Building). U.S. District Court Judge Michael Barrett is scheduled to swear in between 75 and 100 new citizens, in what has become an annual event at Cincinnati State. Cincinnati State to launch Center of Sustainability Excellence

(4/28/11) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is partnering with the National Sustainability Coalition and the International Sustainability Institute of Applied Sciences to launch an initiative designed to cement its standing as a regional leader in sustainability education. Cincinnati State President Dr. O’Dell M. Owens today announced the establishment of a “Center of Sustainability Excellence.” The program will begin with an 8-hour online course that provides an in-depth overview of sustainability concepts and the business case for sustainable development. Those who complete the prerequisite e-course earn a certificate in addition to one credit hour and qualify to take an entire sustainability program consisting of seven additional accredited courses being offered this summer and fall at Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center in Evendale. Students, faculty, staff and friends of the college bought nearly 1,300 tickets as part of a promotion that was aimed at not only joining together for a little fun off campus, but also ensuring that Cincinnati State’s new president, Dr. O’dell M. Owens, would have the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. (The 2011 event represents a marked increase from last year’s Cincinnati State Day at the Reds, which drew about 75 participants.) Cincinnati State to host documentary film series; public welcome

(4/26/11) As part of its Honors Experience program, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is hosting a documentary film series in May. While designed for students, the screenings ¬– each followed by a discussion, including one May 17 with award-winning documentary filmmaker Andrea Torrice – will be open to the public free of charge. Each of the films was shot in Cincinnati, by professionals based in the region. In recent years the Honors Experience has been bringing a recognized scholar or professional to the Cincinnati State campus. Torrice, this year’s choice, has focused her work on contemporary issues, notably problems facing urban America. According to Marcha Hunley, director of the Honors Experience, the panel responsible for the program decided this year to expand it over a three-week period and discuss how documentary films engage citizens on a variety of topics. Concept artist with Hollywood background to visit Cincinnati State

(4/25/11) Andrew Probert, a concept artist known for his work in television, film, computer gaming and theme park design, will visit Cincinnati State May 2 and 3. Probert will give a presentation at 6 p.m. Monday, May 2 in the ATLC Auditorium that includes examples of his work on such Hollywood hits as “Back to the Future” and two of the “Star Trek” films. At 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, Probert will conduct a drawing clinic in the Conference Center in the Main Building at Cincinnati State. Read more

Cincinnati State to open Tutoring Center “annex” April 25

(4/22/11) It doesn’t take long for new students at Cincinnati State to discover what faculty and staff have known for years: if you want to find instructor Brad Levy, a good place to start looking is the cafeteria. It’s not because he’s particularly fond of eating. Rather, it’s because he could quite often be found seated at a book-strewn table in the middle of the noisy cafeteria, surrounded by students, engrossed in another volunteer tutoring session. Levy teaches developmental math and algebra at Cincinnati State. Last year he was one of two instructors awarded the college’s House-Bruckmann Award for teaching excellence. Read more

Student, professional chefs will compete at Midwest Culinary Institute

(4/15/11) The Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the American Culinary Federation will host its annual competition this weekend at the Midwest Culinary Institute. Student and professional teams from as far away as San Diego, New York, and Detroit will be competing against local students and chefs for national medals. All available spaces in the competition have been filled, with 69 chefs and students competing. This competition, which involves the preparation of both hot and cold dishes, is regarded as one of the premium events of this kind in the American Culinary Federation’s national calendar. Read more

Cincinnati State trustee testifies before budget subcommittee

(4/13/11) Mark Walton, a member of the Board of Trustees of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and a vice president with Fifth Third Bank, testified recently before the Ohio House Finance & Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education about the important role that community colleges play in workforce development. Walton – himself a Cincinnati State graduate – told committee members that community colleges build strong relationships with the business community and quickly respond to their training needs. “The nimble nature of community colleges as well as their long history of workforce training has been a shining light to workers and employers during this current economic downturn,” said Walton, who began his banking career as a co-op student at Cincinnati State. He later earned a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Cincinnati. He is currently the Community Reinvestment Act Manager for Greater Cincinnati at Fifth Third Bank. Read more

Academic teams will square off April 30 at Cincinnati State

(4/08/11) Academic teams from 16 high schools will compete Saturday, April 30 at Cincinnati State in the Southwest Regional of the 2011 Ohio Academic Competition. The event at Cincinnati State is one of six regional competitions that will be taking place across Ohio on April 30. The top two finishers from each regional will move on to the state finals in May. The 16 teams competing April 30 represent the top performers from the many academic leagues competing in the southwestern part of the state. For the past four months students have been matching wits in a series of weekly contests and tournaments in one-on-one, question/answer competitions. Read more

Cincinnati State to host brownfield seminar focusing on plants

(4/5/11) Cincinnati State’s Landscape Horticulture Technologies Department, in cooperation with the college’s Workforce Development Center, will sponsor a seminar April 15 on the use of plants to help promote the reclamation of brownfield sites. The technical term for the process is “phytoremediation.’’ It refers to the use of plants to remove or neutralize contaminants in polluted soil or water. Read more

Cincinnati State names Nick Nissley Dean of Business Technologies

(2/01/11) Dr. Nick Nissley, the former executive director of leadership development programs for The Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, has been named dean of the Business Technologies Division at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. (1/13/11) Omar Cummings, one of the most exciting scorers in American MLS soccer today, will be inducted into the Cincinnati State Athletic Hall of Fame on Jan. 22. Cummings, a native of Jamaica, started his American career at Cincinnati State in 2003. Green Building Council honors Cincinnati State faculty member

(12/23/10) The Cincinnati Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council has presented its fourth annual “Sustainable Leader of the Year Award’’ to Larry Feist, a faculty member at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.Feist is chairman of the electro-mechanical engineering technology program and co-chairman of the power systems engineering technology program at Cincinnati State. At Cincinnati State, he introduced and developed the renewable energy major and certificate program, which was the first of its kind to win approval from the Ohio Board of Regents. (12/10/10) A team from Cincinnati State’s Midwest Culinary Institute won a regional Silver Medal during the Villeroy & Boch Culinary World Cup at the recently-concluded Expogast 2010. The competition was held over Thanksgiving Week in Luxembourg. It attracted more than 2,500 chefs and confectioners from 53 countries. Two Cincinnati State soccer players earn All American honors

(12/3/10) Two members of the Cincinnati State men’s soccer team that played in the national finals last month won All American awards Friday from the National Junior College Athletic Association. Ashton Bennett, a forward and second-year student from Clarendon, Jamaica, was named to the Div. I All-American First Team. In his first year at Cincinnati State, Bennett was named to the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for his combined athletic and academic performance. Cody Clark, a second-year midfielder from Bright, Indiana (East Central High School), was named to the Div. I All-American Second Team. Last year Clark was one of five players from Cincinnati State to be named to the OCCAC All Conference First Team. Read more

Board authorizes negotiations for Middletown campus

(10/27/10) The Board of Trustees of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has authorized negotiations aimed at establishing a campus in Middletown. The unanimous vote Tuesday (Oct. 26) came after representatives of the City of Middletown approached Cincinnati State about setting up a campus in downtown property that it owns or proposes to acquire. The property includes the historic (1922) Manchester Inn, a 78-room hotel with a restaurant and banquet hall; a former senior citizens center and a former Cincinnati Gas & Electric building that currently houses The Middletown Journal. Scholarship Golf Outing will benefit Cincinnati State students

Cincinnati State expands free parking initiative

(9/2/10) Spurred by a greater than expected surge in enrollment and a change in construction plans involving its Ludlow Avenue Gateway construction project, Cincinnati State officials today announced plans to expand a free offsite parking program for students when the Early Fall Term begins on Sept. 7. The original plan anticipated leasing 200 parking spaces during the day and 100 in the evening, with the ability to add more if needed, at a lot in Northside about 1.8 miles from campus. The revised plan calls for leasing at least 475 spaces during the day and 375 in the evening at the Greater Bethlehem Temple Church lot at 4781 Hamilton Avenue in Northside, near the intersection with Ashtree Drive. Cincinnati State will offer free off-site parking to students

(8/24/10) Cincinnati State will offer free parking and free shuttle-bus service from a lot in Northside starting in Early Fall Term 2010 as part of a series of efforts to relieve parking congestion at its main campus. The lot is located 1.8 miles from campus at 4781 Hamilton Avenue, on property owned by the Greater Bethlehem Temple Church near the intersection with Ashtree Drive. Two full-sized shuttle buses will run to and from campus from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Fridays. Cincinnati State trustees name Dr. O’dell M. Owens as president

Scholarship Golf Outing will help Cincinnati State students

Cincinnati State’s summer enrollment rises sharply over last year

(7/27/10) Summer term enrollment at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is up 18 percent over the same period a year ago. As of the close of the official reporting period for the Summer 2010 Term, enrollment stood at 7,818. Last year at this time, Cincinnati State had 6,608 students. In the past five years, summer enrollment has increased by 51 percent and the number of credit hours taken has grown by 60 percent, according to Anne Foster, Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness. Presidential Search Committee recommends two candidates

(7/14/10) The Presidential Search Committee today announced that it will recommend two candidates to the board of trustees of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. The recommended candidates are: Dr. Mitchel D. Livingston, vice president for Student Affairs, Chief Diversity Officer and Professor of Educational Studies at the University of Cincinnati; and Dr. O’dell M. Owens, a physician and the current Hamilton County Coroner and a former member of the University of Cincinnati board of trustees. Cincinnati State to offer new major in stormwater management

(6/15/10) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has won approval from the Ohio Board of Regents to launch a new major in stormwater management. This initiative is largely a response to the growing effort to meet federal water quality standards by minimizing the interaction between stormwater and sanitary sewer systems. Increasingly, governmental officials and property owners are also trying to reduce erosion and the contamination of waterways from runoff during heavy rainfall events. “In Greater Cincinnati, and really throughout much of the nation, the Clean Water Act is making stormwater management a genuine priority,’’ said Dr. Ann Gunkel, chair of Cincinnati State’s Environmental Engineering Technology program. Cincinnati State to raise tuition 3.5 percent in Early Fall Term

(5/26/10) Trustees at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College voted Tuesday to raise tuition by 3.5 percent, effective in the Early Fall Term of 2010.Tuition, currently $83 per credit hour, will rise to $85.90. About 60 percent of Cincinnati State’s students are part-time and carry an average of nine credit hours per term. A full-time student is regarded as one who carries 12 or more credit hours a term. For a student carrying nine credit hours the tuition increase would amount to $26.10 a term. Read more

Academic teams will square off April 24 at Cincinnati State

(4/21/10) Academic teams from 17 high schools will compete April 24 at Cincinnati State in the Southwest Regional of the 2010 Ohio Academic Competition. The top two finishers will move on to the state finals in May. The 17 teams competing Saturday represent the top performers from academic leagues in southwestern Ohio. Cincinnati State to share in health information training grant

(4/9/10) Cincinnati State is one of 17 community colleges in the Midwest, and one of 70 in the United States, chosen to participate in a federal program designed to train workers for jobs supporting a fast-growing health information network. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (or HITECH) Act, passed by Congress in 2009 as part of the economic stimulus package, contains a variety of measures designed to encourage the rapid adoption of electronic health information technologies by physicians, hospitals and other providers. (3/30/10) Approximately 150 high school students and teachers will visit Cincinnati State Wednesday, March 31, for a full set of hands-on, environmentally-oriented activities. The day’s theme is “Going Green Makes Cents.’’ The activities will deal with water conservation, air pollution control, energy conservation and the economics of recycling, among other topics. Cincinnati State’s enrollment rises 30 percent over year-ago levels

(3/9/10) Enrollment at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has again shattered its all-time high, rising 30 percent over the same period a year ago. As of the close of the official reporting period for the Winter 2010 Term, enrollment stood at 11,319. Last year at this time, Cincinnati State had just 8,692 students. “For the longest time, the veterans here at Cincinnati State wondered when we were ever going to hit the 10,000-student milestone,’’ remarked interim president Dr. John Henderson. “Well, we raced past that milestone last year and didn’t even slow down. Cincinnati State will honor first Health Careers Collaborative grads

(3/2/10) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will host a dinner Wednesday, March 3 to honor the first group of students to graduate through the Health Careers Collaborative. The collaborative represents an innovative effort by some of Cincinnati’s leading educational and health care institutions. Their initial aim was to help employees – those with a strong work ethic but limited educational skills – advance in their careers. Thanks to a $4.9 million federal grant announced last month (February, 2010), the program will be expanded and will eventually include those who are not currently employed. Read more

Cincinnati State, CBT, Rockwell to celebrate partnership on March 2

(2/26/10) Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center in Evendale will be the site of a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1:30 p.m. March 2 to celebrate its partnership with CBT and Rockwell Automation. Rockwell Automation, a multi-national corporation, is a leading designer and manufacturer of equipment used to control industrial processes. CBT, based in Cincinnati, is a regional supplier of industrial automation products and is a distributor for Rockwell Automation products and services. Read more

Cincinnati State students win 7 of 15 student ADDY Awards

(2/24/10) Students from Cincinnati State’s Multimedia Information Design (MID) programs won seven of the 15 student awards presented in the 2010 ADDY® Award competition sponsored by the Cincinnati Ad Club. Cincinnati State students won Best of Show, two Gold ADDYs, and four Silver ADDYs during ceremonies Feb. 20. Cincinnati State students have won the Best of Show award in the local competition in three of the last four years. Read more

Cincinnati State will host returning Marines, families

(2/19/10) A U.S. Marine reserve unit that left last summer for service in Iraq will return to Cincinnati this weekend and reunite with their families at the Evendale campus of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. The Marines are from Communications Company, Headquarters Battalion, 4th Marine Division, which is based in Cincinnati and Indianapolis. They represent some of the last Marines to withdraw from Iraq. The Marines are scheduled to arrive by plane in Cincinnati and Louisville and arrive by bus in two separate groups at Cincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center, 10100 Reading Road in Evendale. A brief welcoming reception is planned in the auditorium at the Workforce Development Center. Members of the news media are invited to attend, and will have an opportunity to conduct interviews if Marines and family members consent. Read more

(2/17/10) Cincinnati State will share in a $5 million federal grant to help train displaced workers for new careers in the biomedical industry. Health Careers Collaborative wins $4.9 million stimulus grant

(2/12/10) The Health Careers Collaborative of Greater Cincinnati was awarded more than $4.9 million in federal stimulus funds Friday to support the expansion of an education and jobs readiness program that has already helped hundreds improve their lives. Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is the lead partner in the grant, which will be shared by a collaborative that includes community organizations and some of the region’s leading hospital groups and educational institutions. Cincinnati State to raise tuition 3.5 percent in Spring Term

(1/27/10) Trustees at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College voted Tuesday to raise tuition by 3.5 percent, effective in Spring Term 2010. Tuition, currently $80.20 per credit hour for Ohio residents and those in nearby counties in Northern Kentucky and Indiana who are covered under tuition reciprocity agreements, will rise to $83. For a part-time student carrying six credit hours, the increase would amount to $16.80 a term. For full-time students (who account for about 40 percent of total enrollment at Cincinnati State) carrying 12 credit hours, tuition would rise by $35.60 a term. Read more

Cincinnati State’s relief effort for Haiti focuses on drinking water

(1/15/10) Students and faculty at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College are joining the relief effort for victims of the earthquake in Haiti – with a particular focus on clean drinking water. For years, students and faculty members have been involved in a program that demonstrates how packets of Procter & Gamble’s PUR powder can be used to make contaminated water clean enough to drink. In addition to hosting demonstrations on campus for Cincinnati State students and visiting high school groups, representatives of student organizations have gone to high schools throughout Greater Cincinnati to talk about the importance of water quality and the cost-effectiveness of the PUR process. Governor makes appointments to Cincinnati State board of trustees

(12/17/09) Gov. Ted Strickland has filled two vacancies on the board of trustees of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.  Named recently to serve on the nine-member board were Cathy Crain, a retired investment counselor and a well-known arts and civic volunteer in Greater Cincinnati. She will serve the remainder of a term that expires October 30, 2010, and Robert Ringel, vice president, legal and assistant corporate secretary for Duke Energy. Cincinnati State’s enrollment reaches another peak

(12/4/09) Enrollment at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College continues to surge. As of the close of the official reporting period for the Late Fall Term, enrollment was 10,622 – a 24 percent increase over the same period in 2008. Robotics competition will bring 39 teams to Cincinnati State

(12/2/09) Youngsters from 39 school and neighborhood teams in southwestern Ohio will soon be powering up their LEGO robots to see which has the best “Smart Moves.’’ The students will participate Saturday, Dec. 12 and Sunday, Dec. 13 in the 2009 iSPACE FIRST LEGO League Regional Tournament, which will be hosted by Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. It will be the largest FIRST LEGO League (FLL) qualifying event in Ohio this year, and is part of an international competition involving 146,000 children aged 9 to 14 in more than 50 countries. Winning teams will have the opportunity to advance to championship tournaments and eventually to the FLL World Festival April 15-17, 2010 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Read more

Cincinnati State coach records 100th victory

(9/25/09) Mike Combs, head coach of the Cincinnati State men’s soccer team, notched a personal milestone Friday when the Surge defeated visiting Schoolcraft College. The 1-0 win over Schoolcraft, a community college based in Livonia, Michigan, marked Combs’ 100th career victory as a college coach. Cincinnati State wins U.S. Green Building Council grant

(9/22/09) The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded Cincinnati State Technical and Community College an “Excellence in Green Building Curriculum Incentive Grant’’ for 2009. More than 150 institutions of higher education entered the USGBC’s grant competition this year – a 30 percent increase over 2008, the first year of the competition. For 2009, judges awarded 10 Recognition Awards of $1,000 each and three Incentive Grants worth $10,000 apiece. Cincinnati State enrollment jumps 23.5 percent

(9/17/09) Enrollment at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is up 23.5 percent over the same period in 2008, and is now at an all-time high. The increase for the College’s Early Fall term comes on the heels of a Summer term that saw enrollment climb by 32 percent over the prior year, and a Spring 2009 enrollment increase of nearly 9 percent over the Spring 2008 term. “Students are coming to Cincinnati State in record numbers,’’ said interim president Dr. John Henderson. “It’s encouraging to see so many men and women pursuing the education and training they need to succeed in today’s economy.’’ Read more

Cincinnati State to celebrate Founder’s Week Sept. 19-25

(9/16/09) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a series of Founder’s Week events from Sept. 19 through Sept. 25. Cincinnati State to host Scholarship 5K Run and Fitness Walk

(9/11/09) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will host a 5K Run and Fitness Walk on Saturday, Oct. 17, starting at 9 a.m. Pre-race registration for non-students is $20. The fee is $25 the day of the event. In honor of Sweetest Day, couples may participate in the run or walk for $35 and be entered in a special drawing for a romantic getaway and other prizes. Alumni group launches scholarship fund drive

(8/26/09) Alumni of the former Central and Courter Tech high schools in Clifton have launched a scholarship fund for students at the institution that now occupies the site, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Members of the Central High/Courter Tech Alumni Group (an affiliate of the Cincinnati State Alumni Association) gathered today at Cincinnati State to announce details of efforts to raise money for the project. Cincinnati State hosts Master Sommeliers examination

Dater Foundation approves grant for Connect2Success

(7/10/09) The Charles H. Dater Foundation has awarded Cincinnati State Technical and Community College a $10,000 grant for use in a regional program designed to help young people complete their education and find productive jobs. Cincinnati State is host to the program, known as Connect2Success, and partners with more than two dozen organizations in the region to deliver services. The program -- which is also funded by Hamilton County and the state of Ohio, among others – is open to persons between the ages of 15 and 25 who live in Hamilton County. Read more

Ohio, Indiana tuition agreement takes effect today

(7/2/09) Southeastern Indiana residents will be able to enroll in most programs at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College at in-state rates, thanks to a new tuition reciprocity agreement. The agreement, which took effect July 1, is part of a larger reciprocity package negotiated by higher education officials involving 14 schools in Ohio and six in Indiana. Read more

Regional Dropout Summit will be held Thursday, June 25

Cincinnati State commencement will be energetic

(6/11/09) Dr. Steven Chu, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy and a co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics, will be the featured speaker at the June 18 commencement ceremony for graduates of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. The event will be held at U.S. Bank Arena starting at 7 p.m. This year more than 1,300 students will graduate from Cincinnati State. Nearly 700 will be awarded associate of applied science degrees. Cincinnati State students, faculty reach beyond borders

(6/3/09) Cincinnati State faculty, staff and students have been taking their Safe Water for Africa program on the road – with impressive results. The student group Beyond Borders -- with support from faculty member Martha Brosz (who regularly offers lessons on global drinking water issues) and from recent graduate Cara Dyne (who is now employed in the Upward Bound program at Cincinnati State) -- has been visiting high schools in the region, demonstrating simple, inexpensive water purification techniques. Learning to harness sunshine

(5/28/09) Contractors from as far away as Toledo, Ohio and Huntington, W. Va., came to Cincinnati State recently to attend a three-day training session on solar hot-water systems. Participants met for two days in the renewable energy lab at Cincinnati State to hear presentations about the theory and practice behind solar thermal applications, and to learn how to install solar thermal devices. Among those addressing the class were Larry Feist, chairman of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy program at Cincinnati State, and Athan Barkoukis, a program manager for Green Energy Ohio, a nonprofit statewide organization dedicated to promoting environmentally and economically sustainable energy policies and practices in Ohio. Hatter honored by chamber

Harrier named national co-op educator of the year

(5/13/09) Peggy Harrier, Dean of the Business Technologies Division at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, has been named “Educator of the Year’’ by the Cooperative Education and Internship Association. The designation – formally known as the Dean Herman Schneider Award -- was made at the CEIA’s annual conference, held this spring in Portland, Ore. CEIA officials said the award reflects Harrier’s leadership in co-op education at Cincinnati State and with local, regional and national organizations, as well has her record of scholarship in the field. Cincinnati State to award six honors scholarships

Welcome back, Central High and Courter Tech!

(5/6/09) As part of the year-long celebration of its 40th anniversary, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is planning to extend a welcome to those who knew the campus from its high school days. On Friday, June 5, and Saturday June 6, Cincinnati State will host several events for those who attended Central High School and later Courter Technical School – each of which occupied the structure now known as the Main Building on the Clifton campus. Energy Secretary Steven Chu will give commencement address at Cincinnati State

(4/29/09) U.S. Energy Secretary Dr. Steven Chu, a noted research scientist and co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics, will give the commencement address for June graduates of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College. Chu has emerged over the past decade as a leading voice in the push to develop renewable energy sources and address global climate change, and is a leading advocate for President Obama’s energy and climate policies. Media Advisory: Cincinnati State to host Earth Jam Thursday, April 30

(4/28/09) Students, faculty members and industry partners will gather Thursday, April 30 at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College for the 11th annual Toyota Environmental Earth Jam. The event, held each year during Earth Week, is designed to promote environmental awareness. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities that focus on local environmental issues and solutions. Cincinnati State wins energy grant

(4/23/09) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has received a grant of nearly $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Labor to expand its programs in renewable energy, “green’’ manufacturing and construction, and other fields related to energy conservation and pollution control. According to officials in the Grant Administration Office at Cincinnati State’s Division of Institutional Advancement, the money will be used over the next three years to expand course offerings and workforce training programs as well as support efforts by a consortium of schools, employers, non-profit organizations and governmental agencies to increase job opportunities in “green’’ businesses. Cincinnati State students joining Thirty Hour Famine

(4/22/09) Students at Cincinnati State are joining a worldwide effort to raise awareness about hunger. Members of a campus student group, Beyond Borders, will set up a cardboard shantytown outdoors in the courtyard of the Advanced Technology Learning Center (ATLC) on the Clifton campus beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, April 24. The event includes a showing of the film “Blood Diamond.’’ Participants will spend the night in the cardboard structures they created. On Saturday students will distribute canned goods they have collected over the past month to organizations in Greater Cincinnati that assist children. Read more

Academic teams will tangle in regional contest

(4/17/09) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will host one of the six regional Ohio Academic Competition events that will take place around the state Saturday, April 18. More than 120 students from 16 public and private high schools will face off in the Southwest Regional at Cincinnati State. The double-elimination, one-on-one tournament will begin at 9 a.m. in the Main Building of Cincinnati State’s Clifton campus. Cincinnati State to launch Energy and Environment Center

(4/17/09) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College is launching an initiative designed to cement its standing as a regional leader in energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable design and the environment. Cincinnati State President John Henderson today announced the establishment of the Energy and Environment Center at Cincinnati State. The center will function as a way to consolidate Cincinnati State’s green energy and construction offerings and expand them as opportunities arise. But, more importantly, it will serve as a regional resource for businesses, community leaders and learners who are interested in environmental and energy-related issues and new careers in these expanding fields. Cincinnati State students win regional ADDY awards

(4/16/09) Students from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College have won a gold medal and three silver medals in a regional ADDY® competition covering Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The gold medal was one of four presented to student contestants in the region. It was awarded in the Interactive Media category, for a website devoted to the Copperleaf Disc Golf Course on the Cincinnati State campus in Clifton. In addition to presenting the course layout and features, the display provided information about the arboretum on the front lawn of the campus where the course is located. Read more

MCI pastry chef will compete on Food Network

(4/15/09) Megan Ketover, a pastry chef at the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, has been invited to participate in a “Food Network Challenge’’ this month. Ketover will be up against three other chefs during a television episode that will be taped April 30 and broadcast later this year. All four pastry chefs on the show will face the same challenge: Build a bridge from cereal and other ingredients. Read more

Cincinnati State students go "Beyond Borders"

Solar electric car to be assembled at Cincinnati State

(4/3/09) Cincinnati State faculty and students will spend part of their spring break supervising construction of a solar/electric car. The vehicle – an electric car with a solar panel to recharge its batteries -- will be built from a kit by approximately 20 students from Clark Montessori school in Cincinnati. The vehicle will then be used by the Cincinnati Parks Department for maintenance and other tasks. Read more

Cincinnati State team proves it can ascend

(3/27/09)  Whether or not you know it by its proper name, you’re probably familiar with the annual Canstruction® event. It’s a food drive – one now organized more than 100 North American cities – that has a sculptural dimension. Participating teams collect or purchase canned goods and form them into iconic structures, using a minimum of outside materials to hold them together. When the contest is over, the canned goods are donated to food banks. Read more

Cincinnati State students win top honors

(3/17/09) Two students at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College have been awarded top honors in the 2009 All-USA Academic Team competition. Mary Conner, a Fairfield resident and a second-year student at Cincinnati State, was named a Silver Scholar in the national competition. She was also one of 10 students in Ohio named to the First Team of the All-Ohio Academic Team. Another Cincinnati State honors student, Meghan Coil of Northside, was named to the All-Ohio Academic Team’s Second Team. Read more 

Culinary programs bring home more honors

(3/17/09) A group of Cincinnati State graduates who are now in the culinology program at the University of Cincinnati have won top honors in a prestigious national competition.The team – consisting of Midwest Culinary Institute graduates John Parsons, Christian Serrato, Andrew Scholle and Robert Coltrane – garnered a nearly perfect score to win the Research Chef’s Association Student Culinology Competition for 2009. Their faculty advisor was Chef Christopher Keegan, a faculty advisor and adjunct instructor at the Midwest Culinary Institute at Cincinnati State who is also an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati.  Read more

(3/16/09)  Anyone who has ever had their blood drawn – just about everyone, in other words – understands how important it is to have the job done by someone who knows what they’re doing. It’s also easy to understand why phlebotomy technicians are in high demand in the job market these days. Phlebotomy techs – the name given to those who collect blood specimens and perform other services – work in hospitals, clinics, medical group practices and elsewhere throughout the health care system.  Read more

Cincinnati State to offer Practical Nursing at Great Oaks

(3/11/09) Gov. Ted Strickland’s vision of an adult education system that meets a wide range of needs moves ahead today as Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and Great Oaks Career Campuses combine their efforts in a Practical Nursing Certificate program. The new Cincinnati State/Great Oaks Practical Nursing Program replaces the current Great Oaks School of Nursing. School administrators say the change will have widespread benefits. Read more

Virus spread through flash drives affects computers on campus

(3/9/09)  Cincinnati State's Information Technology Services recently discovered a computer virus affecting staff, faculty, and student machines in the Main Building. The virus is carried and spread through the use of flash drives inserted into the USB ports of the infected computers. When a flash drive in inserted into an infected computer, it infects the drive as well. The next computer that flash drive goes into will then also develop infected files. Read more

College Transfer Fair a success

Board approves administrative restructuring

(2/26/09) The board of trustees of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has approved an administrative restructuring plan developed by Interim President Dr. John Henderson. As part of that plan -- which Henderson said is motivated largely by new standards and goals articulated by the Ohio Board of Regents -- the College has established the position of Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Entrepreneurial Development. Cincinnati State dominates student ADDY contest

(2/12/09) Students from the Multimedia Information Design (MID) programs at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College won 16 of the 22 student awards presented in the 2009 ADDY® Award competition sponsored by the Cincinnati Ad Club. Cincinnati State students won Best of Show, five of the eight Gold ADDYs and 10 of the 13 Silver ADDYs presented during a ceremony Feb. 7 at Paul Brown Stadium. Cincinnati State to honor John Hurley

(2/6/09) Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will honor former basketball coach and athletic director John Hurley on Feb. 18. Hurley, who has recorded more victories than almost any other active coach in college basketball, will be installed as the inaugural member of the Cincinnati State Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime ceremonies during the men’s basketball game against Sinclair Community College. The ceremony will be followed by a reception after the game at Cincinnati State’s Midwest Culinary Institute. Read more

Women’s basketball team is on a roll

(2/5/09) When the 2008-09 basketball season began, the Cincinnati State Women’s Surge wasn’t on anyone’s radar. Little wonder in that. Cincinnati State, after all, had only two returning players. The team had a new coach, Theresa Check, who was facing the prospect of not only a new school but double duty as its athletic director. Cincinnati State students surge to raise money for scholarships

(10/17/08) Students and supporters of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College will pound the pavement in Clifton’s Gaslight District Saturday (Oct. 18) to raise money for scholarships.The Surge5K, a 3.1-mile run/walk, will get underway at 9 a.m. from the Advanced Technology and Learning Center at Cincinnati State’s campus. Cincinnati State expands recycling initiatives

(10/07/08) Cincinnati State’s student-run Environmental Club will be helping the college launch a recycling initiative on Thursday, Oct. 9. 
Between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. students will engage in a variety of recycling-themed events as part of Club Day activities in the courtyard of the ATLC. Read more
