Cincinnati State To Expand Academic Offerings At Harrison Campus
Cincinnati State Technical and Community College plans to expand academic course offerings at its Harrison campus, which is now used primarily for aviation-related programs.

Dr. Monica Posey, Cincinnati State’s academic vice president, said the college plans to offer a variety of courses starting with the 2013 Fall Semester and gradually expand those offerings.

“Our research indicates there’s a significant demand in western Hamilton County and southeastern Indiana among those who would like to get a start on a college education close to home, and avoid long, costly commutes,” Dr. Posey said.

Most of the new courses planned for the Harrison campus will come through Cincinnati State’s Humanities and Sciences Division, and many will carry Ohio TAG (Transfer Assurance Guides) designations. Credits earned in TAG courses are accepted for transfer at any public college or university in Ohio.

“We’ll offer a mix of courses, and a mix of times,” said Robbin Hoopes, dean of the Humanities and Sciences Division at Cincinnati State. “Our ambition is to meet the needs of students who are just leaving high school as well as those who might have job or family obligations during the day.”

The lineup for the 2013 Fall Semester includes:

  • A First Year Experience course (required of all students as an orientation to the study skills and demands of a college environment)
  • Two Academic Foundations courses, one in math and one in language arts, for those who need to prepare for higher level work in those areas
  • English 101, an introductory composition course
  • Art 110, an introduction to the visual arts in Western culture
  • Math 121, an introduction to technical algebra and geometry with statistics

Those courses will be repeated in the 2014 Spring Semester if demand warrants, and several others will be added. Among those under consideration for the expanded lineup at Harrison are some of the most popular courses in the Humanities and Sciences first-year sequence, including Interpersonal Communications (COMM 105), World History (HST 101) and Introduction to Psychology (PSY 110).

Cincinnati State will continue to operate its aviation technologies programs at the Harrison campus, which adjoins the Cincinnati State West Airport.

The beauty of the Harrison campus, Dr. Posey said, is that it offers sufficient room for general academic classes without impinging on the aviation programs. Moreover, she said, Cincinnati State has entered into conversations with officials at Harrison High School (which abuts the campus and the college-owned Cincinnati West airport) about holding late afternoon or evening classes there if necessary to meet demand.

Cincinnati State already has dual-enrollment agreements in place with Harrison High School, allowing students to take certain courses for both high school and Cincinnati State credit.

College Information Sessions describing the new offerings and the college in general will be held July 23 and July 30 at the Harrison session. Two sessions will be held each day, one starting at 9 a.m., the other at 6:30 p.m.

A special 1-day enrollment event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Cincinnati State offers more than 100 associate degree and certificate programs in business technologies, health and public safety, engineering technologies, humanities and sciences and information technologies. It has historically maintained one of the largest co-op programs among two-year colleges in the U.S.
