‘Recipe for Success’ On Nov. 3 Will Raise Funds For Hospitality Program
Culinary students, mentored by some of the top chefs in Greater Cincinnati, will square off Nov. 3 at Horseshoe Cincinnati during an event to raise scholarship funds for a unique training program.

Proceeds from the “Recipe for Success” event will be earmarked to help support the Hospitality Academy of Cincinnati, a partnership between the Freestore Foodbank and Cincinnati State. The Academy, launched in 2012, helps urban, disadvantaged students improve job-readiness skills, prepare for careers in the culinary industry or enroll in an academic pathway.

The Nov. 3 “Recipe for Success” event at Horseshoe Cincinnati will feature:

  • A cooking competition with culinary students and local chefs using a mystery basket of ingredients. Local chefs will coach/mentor student chefs.
  • Culinary demonstrations with chocolate, sugar/dessert and ice carving
  • Interactive tasting stations from 20 of the area’s finest restaurants
  • Wine & spirits

“The mission of the Hospitality Academy of Cincinnati is to provide students the education and training they need to enter the hospitality industry,” said Kevin Kline, general manager of Horseshoe Cincinnati and the event’s honored guest. “It is a great initiative and one we are proud to support as a hospitality industry leader in our community.”

Among the restaurants participating in the Nov. 3 event are Anchor; Carlo & Johnny; Cincinnati COOKS! Catering, a Freestore Foodbank Enterprise; Daveed’s Catering; Enoteca Emilia; Grandview Tavern & Grill; Jean Robert’s Table; JTM; Nicholson’s; The Summit Restaurant at the Midwest Culinary Institute; and Zula.

Participating Chef/Mentors include Greg J. Grisanti , Frisch’s; Martin Johnson, JTM Food Group; Jeffrey Ponder, Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati; Michael Schubert, Kroger; Brian Brinkman, Sysco Cincinnati; Danny Bungenstock, Midwest Culinary Institute; and Marcus Hazel, Freestore Foodbank.

The event will run from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Emcees are Marilyn Harris, a radio personality and author; and Chef Robert LaFond with the JTM Food Group.

Celebrity judges include Cincinnati State President O’dell M. Owens and Julie Gosdin, author of the “Wine Me, Dine Me” culinary blog.

Sponsors include Horseshoe Cincinnati, JTM Food Group, Sysco, Pearson, Kroger, Frisch’s, Turner and UC Health.

Tickets for the event will be priced as follows:

  • VIP: $250
  • General Admission: $100
  • Young Professionals: $50

The Freestore Foodbank ( is the largest emergency food and services provider to children and families in the Tri-State.  The organization is a partner to more than 315 nonprofit member agencies spread across 20 counties, through which it distributes over 16 million meals and other products to more than 300,000 individuals annually. By providing emergency food distribution, the Freestore Foodbank works to determine the root causes of poverty and food insecurity and is able to provide an array of services (including emergency clothing, housing, Food Stamps assistance and Medicaid outreach) aimed at creating self-reliance. The Freestore Foodbank is a member of Feeding America.
