Green Initiatives

Cincinnati State is committed to maintaining an environmentally friendly campus, and incorporating green practices into the standard business operations of the College.

The Surge Green Committee has thrived since 2008, when students, faculty, and College staff began working together to make Cincinnati State a "Green” College.

The Surge Green Committee has subcommittees for Education Advocacy, Energy Conservation, Green Purchasing, Transportation, and Waste Reduction & Recycling.  These groups have planned and carried out activities such as:

  • Installing recycling bins throughout our campuses for paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum products
  • Installing bicycle racks
  • Incorporating sustainability concepts into the First Year Experience course taken by all new students
  • Recycling automotive oil used in College vehicles
  • Installing timers that control lights during non-activity times, to reduce electrical usage
  • Converting to eco-friendly custodial products
  • Increasing use of mulch and composting
  • Using compostable materials in the cafeteria in place of plastic and Styrofoam
  • Replacing halide lights in campus garages and other areas with LED fixtures
  • Hosting campus events to promote environmental awareness and green practices, such as a Spring Clean Up for paper and electronic waste, and the annual campus Earth Day educational event
  • Installing stormwater controls throughout campus including rain gardens, permeable pavers, rain harvesting cisterns, porous pavement, and retention basins
  • Using green purchasing practices for the Midwest Culinary Institute and the Summit Restaurant by purchasing sustainably-raised, antibiotic-free Ohio chickens, local antibiotic-free pasteurized pork and lamb, and locally-grown produce whenever possible, as well as acquiring sustainably-harvested seafood.
  • Diverting over four tons of food from landfills and into bellies in the last 12 months by partnering with the food rescue & poverty reduction organization LaSoupe
