COMPASS® placement test helps you succeed

The COMPASS placement test is designed to help determine which classes you should take as you start your studies at Cincinnati State.  It accurately places you into reading, writing, and math classes that are best suited for your abilities. The placement test is there to help ensure your success; it is not timed but may not be retaken for admission purposes.  There is also a short keyboarding test.

Testing must be completed before admission and registration, unless transfer credit makes you eligible for a test waiver.  It will take at least 5-10 business days for you to be admitted after you have submitted the last requirement in the admission process.  Your letter of admission will be sent to your College email account and mailed to the address listed on your application.

Testing details

For your convenience, applicants are individually tested on a drop-in basis, no reservation is required, and there is no charge for the test.  You should submit your application prior to testing.  Please be sure to bring photo ID. Allow approximately 11⁄2 hours for testing.  A calculator, pencil and paper are provided.  Testing is not offered on College holidays.  Group testing must be pre-arranged, please call 513-861-7700 for details.

You may also find additional help with the math portion of the test at www.mathpower.com.  To practice your typing skills go to play.typeracer.com.

Request to waive the COMPASS test

If you have successfully completed college level courses in mathematics, writing, or reading, you may submit a test waiver request. Cincinnati State does not accept SAT scores in place of the COMPASS test.  If you have taken the ACT achievement test within the last two years, you may be exempt from placement testing.  Submit a copy of your ACT scores to the Office of Admission via www.ACTstudent.org.

Apply Early

You should begin the admission process six to eight weeks in advance of the term you plan to attend Cincinnati State. This allows time to facilitate transcript requests, process financial aid, and advise you on your academic pursuits. Note that admission to the College is based on the policy “first-come, first-qualified, first-served.” Applicants are notified of acceptance by mail and via Cincinnati State email.
