Federal Assistance with Education Expenses
The Federal Work-Study Program provides part-time jobs for students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for education expenses. The program encourages community service and work related to each student’s course of study.
The award is available to full and part-time students in degree programs and eligible certificate. programs Work-Study awards are offered first to students with exceptional financial need. Funding is limited and is awarded based on the availability of funds. This program is intended to help train students for the labor market as well as meet their financial needs.
Frequently asked questions about Work-Study
How do I apply?
You must first complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov Cincinnati State’s priority deadline for the FAFSA is February 15th. Priority will be given to students who apply prior to the deadline. There is a place on the FAFSA for you to indicate that you are interested in participating. You must indicate that you are interested in the award on your FAFSA.
How much will I make?
Cincinnati State's current rate of pay is $8/hour. Your total Federal Work-Study award depends on when you apply, your level of need and the funding level of your school.
How will I be paid?
You will be paid bi-weekly on the College's pay schedule. The amount you earn may not exceed your total term Work-Study award. Click here for current pay schedule
Can I work as many hours as I want?
No. Student are not allowed to work more than 20 hours per week during the term (depending on the amount of their award as it may be less in some cases) and no more than 40 per week during the term break (depending on the amount of their award as it may be less in some cases). In addition, the amount you earn cannot exceed your total Federal Work-Study award each term. Students make their own work schedule that meet the needs of the department they are working in and does not interfere with their class schedule.
What kind of jobs are available?
Work-study jobs are available on and off campus, and include clerical, tutoring, computer lab assistance, and many more.
I'm excited! When can I start?
The Work Study Hiring process is a three step process:
1. You must first complete the ‘Selection Process”. This process is initiated when you indicate on your FAFSA that you are interested in Work Study.
2. The second step is the “Screening Process”. During this process you will submit your resume, FWS Questionnaire and begin interviewing with potential supervisors.
3. The final step is the “Hiring Process”. This begins when the supervisors informs the FWS Coordinator that they are interested in hiring you. The FWS Coordinator will send you a hire packet via Surge Mail. Upon completion of

Time sheets are still due on the assigned date at 1 pm. Time sheets submitted late will be accepted but will not be processed until the following pay period. To see due dates for time sheets, click here.
