Cincinnati State earns road win against Cuyahoga Community College

JAN. 28, 2012 - The Cincinnati State men's basketball team won on the road against Cuyahoga Community College by a score of 74 to 63.

For Cincinnati State, Saturday's win carried a little more significance than usual as the team looked to avenge last year's loss at Cuyahoga- a game that decided the 2011 regular season conference championship. Leading the Surge to victory was freshman forward D'Wayne Bazemore who recorded his first double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Following Bazemore was guard Marquis Wilson who finished with 17 points and 3 steals on the afternoon. Charles Clarke chipped in with 13 points followed by Anton Hutchins who scored 12 points as Cincinnati State was able to bounce back from Wednesday's loss to Columbus State Community College.

Improving to 14-5 overall with a 3-2 record in conference play, Cincinnati State will look to make it two wins in a row when they travel on Monday, January 30th to face Vincennes University - a team ranked 6th in the NJCAA D-I national poll.

Cincinnati State falls at home to Columbus State

JAN. 25. 2012 - The Cincinnati State men's basketball team lost to Columbus State by a score of 96 to 84.

Despite a game-high 38 points from sophomore guard Anton Hutchins, the Surge had no answer for Columbus State's balanced offensive attack led by Jordan Watson, Glenn Cosey and Darnell Tubbs - all of whom scored 20 or more points. Cincinnati State also struggled from the free throw line hitting just over 64% as compared to Columbus State's 75%.

After the loss to Columbus State, who is currently ranked 6th in the NJCAA polls, the Surge stand at 13-5 overall with a 2-2 conference record heading into a road matchup against defending Ohio Community College Athletic Conference champion Cuyahoga Community College on Saturday, January 28th.

Cincinnati State earn hard fought win over Owens Community College

JAN. 21, 2012 - The Cincinnati State men's basketball team won 65 to 62 over the Owens Community College Express on Saturday afternoon.

Despite leading throughout the entire game, the Cincinnati State Surge were constantly under duress to make every possession count due to the three point shooting of Owens guard Justin Edmonds who hit 6 three point field goals while shooting 45% from beyond the arc on the afternoon. Cincinnati State's Anton Hutchins countered Edmonds throughout the game scoring a team-high 22 points while shooting 8 for 10 from the field and converting 5 of 6 free throws. Perhaps Hutchins' biggest points came on two clutch free throws to put the Surge up four with just under 30 seconds left in the ball game. Forward Karriem Baker established his presence in the paint scoring 16 points and pulling down 9 rebounds as the team was able to hold on to claim the road victory over its conference rival.

Now at 13-4 overall with a 2-1 conference record, the Surge will return home on Wednesday, January 25th to face Columbus State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

In a first half which had 7 ties and 12 lead changes, Cincinnati State forward Karriem Baker presented a mismatch for the smaller forwards of Daley College. Although only taking two shot attempts, Baker was able to get to line and convert 7 of 8 free throws while drawing fouls on Daley's key player - Ervin Thomas. Thomas would lead all scorers at the half with 11 points while the Surge were led by guard Marquis Wilson who went 2 for 2 from the 3-point line to finish the half with 10 as Daley took a 35 to 34 lead into the break.

Midway through the second half in a close game, Cincinnati State went to their biggest advantage and pounded the ball inside with Karriem Baker and freshman forward Cody Martin (Cleveland Heights HS). Picking up where he left off in the first half, Baker continued to draw fouls and knock down shots at the line converting 11 of 15 free throws and finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Roman Hill signs with top D-II program

roman hill # 24 AUG, 8. 2011 - After playing just one year in the Cincinnati State uniform, Roman Hill has signed a letter of intent to play for Augusta State (GA). After averaging 11.2 points and leading the team with 7.7 rebounds per game while playing at the power forward position, Hill became the leader of the team and was named team MVP by head coach Andre Tate following the season. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Hill's season is the fact that he played in every game with significant injuries to both knees. Despite these injuries, the 6'5 Cincinnati native from Mt. Healthy High School still performed at a high level playing big minutes while starting the majority of the games as he helped lead the Surge to a 24-11 overall record.

“As a natural three, Roman went above our expectation when we were forced to stick him at the four due to injuries up and down our roster,” Tate said. “Roman is a guy who became an instant leader and has great influence on his teammates and on potential recruits.”

In addition to earning team MVP honors, Hill earned the men’s basketball Academic Award for the player with the highest GPA which also served as a critical reason for Augusta State’s interest and his ability to leave Cincinnati State early.

“I am able to go down there for three full years of eligibility while playing for one of the top D-II programs in the country,” Hill says. “It is sad to go. My heart is and will always be in Cincinnati and with my teammates.”

Hill will compete for the starting small forward spot for Augusta State, who finished with an overall record of 30-4 in the 2010-2011 season and ranked 4th in the NCAA D-II rankings.

Roman Hill named Cincinnati State's most valuable player for 2011

JUNE.2, 2011 - For the coaching staff of Cincinnati State, the most valuable player is the individual who helps the team win, performs at a high level and provides leadership on and off the court. Throughout the 2010-2011 season, freshman forward Roman Hill fit the description to the fullest.

"I have known this guy since he was a little kid. Roman has always been someone who will give everything on the court," said coach Andre Tate as he addressed an audience at the Cincinnati State athletic banquet. "He has been a good motivator, great at welcoming potential recruits, and has an extraordinary work ethic."

rome.jpg Part of that leadership quality came from Hill's willingness to do whatever it took for the team to be successful. A natural small-forward, Hill was asked to play and start at the power forward position from the beginning of the 2010-2011 season. Roman answered that challenge by averaging 11.2 points and leading the team in rebounds with 7.7 per game - often times outrebounding players with more size and height.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Hill's season is the fact that he played in every game with significant injuries to both knees. Despite these injuries, the 6'5 Cincinnati native from Mt. Healthy High School still performed at a high level playing big minutes and starting most of the games as he helped lead the Surge to a 23-10 overall record. Cincinnati State finished second in the conference and one win away from a second consecutive NJCAA National Tournament appearance. After the season had ended, Hill had surgery to repair ligaments in his right and left knee which had torn in the later part of the season.

"The toughest thing for me is not being able to play and workout," says Hill, who is now spending the summer rehabilitating his knees. "My goal is to get back to 100% and win next year."

Already taking home the team M.V.P. trophy, Roman Hill also received the men's basketball Academic Award for earning the highest GPA on the team. Also receiving team awards were Marquis Wilson (Unsung Hero) and Bradley Tilford (Most Improved).

Mosley led all scorers in the conference and ranked third nationally averaging nearly 24 points per game. He recorded a season-high 38 points in the Region XII Tournament semi-finals against Columbus State Community College. Mosley has signed with St.Bonaventure of the Atlantic-10 Conference and will play for the Bonnies next fall.

Sophomore guard Melvyn Little was named to the OCCAC All-Conference First Team. Little had a tremendous season for the Surge averaging 14 points per game. Little made huge improvements on the defensive end. In his sophomore season, Little averaged 2.7 steals per game ranking in the top twenty five nationally in the category.

In his two years at Cincinnati State, Little helped lead the Surge to a 50 and 19 overall record and a NJCAA National Finals appearance in 2010. He has verbally committed to play for Southern Indiana University for the fall of 2011.

coach tate 100thCoach Tate wins 100th game

JAN.15, 2011 - With a 94 to 63 win over Owens on January 15th, Cincinnati State Head Coach Andre Tate marked his 100th victory as a head coach. During his time at Cincinnati State, Coach Tate has an overall record of 100-52 (a 66 percent winning percentage). Under Coach Tate's leadership, the Surge have made two trips to the NJCAA National Tournament including last year when Cincinnati State was the 2010 National Junior College Runner-Up. Tate has developed seven First Team All-Conference players, including Cincinnati Bearcat standout John Williamson and Rayshawn Goins, who is currently playing for James Madison.

Surge players headed for D-1 program

APRIL, 2010 - Forward Rayshawn Goins and guard James Millen of the Cincinnati State men's basketball team have signed letters of intent to play at James Madison this upcoming season. Goins led the team in scoring averaging nearly 23 points and 8 rebounds per game. Millen is a local product from Schroder High School. In his two years at Cincinnati State, the 6’2" guard averaged 15 points and 5 assists per game. James’ game was noticed nationally and earned him an invited to participate in the Jerry Muellens Junior College Top 120 Camp in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After their appearance in the NJCAA National Finals, Millen and Goins were named to the National-All Tournament Team.

“James and Ray were great leaders,” Head Coach Andre Tate said. “The reason we went so far last year was the team chemistry. These two guys were one of the main reasons why our team was so close to bringing home the national championship.”
