Men's team announces spring season
The men’s soccer team has scheduled a series of games against four-year schools this spring, as part of its preparation for the regular 2010 fall season.
“It’s a great opportunity to expose our guys to a high level of talent – and to showcase the talent of our players,’’ said Mike Combs, head coach of Cincinnati State teams that have won the Ohio Community College Athletic Association title five of the last seven seasons.
For the spring tune-ups, Combs has arranged games with teams from six separate conferences. Four of the teams on the spring calendar represent Division I schools.
Cincinnati State soccer players moving up
Mike Brizzi, a standout defender on the Cincinnati State men’s soccer team in 2009, has accepted an offer to continue his career at the University of Cincinnati.
During his one year at Cincinnati State, Brizzi was named a team captain and helped lead the Surge to the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference championship. Brizzi was named to the 1st Team All-OCCAC and the 2nd Team All-Region. He also earned numerous "OCCAC Player of the Week" honors throughout the 2009 season, though his season was cut short by an injury just before the team entered the playoffs.
“Mike is a great leader,’’ said Cincinnati State head coach Mike Combs. “UC is getting a great player and a great person.”
Brizzi is one of nine Cincinnati State players to be recruited by Division 1 programs over the past decade.
Meanwhile, second-year midfielder Taron Jordon has committed to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia.
SCAD is an NAIA soccer program that competes in The Sun Conference. The 2009 soccer team finished the regular season ranked 24th nationally with an overall record of 12-3-3. In the Sun Conference, SCAD finished 7-1-1.
While at Cincinnati State, Taron helped the soccer program reach its fifth OCCAC championship in the past seven years and a Top 15 national ranking in both major polls. In Taron's two seasons at Cincinnati State, the soccer program recorded an overall record of 32 wins, 5 losses and 2 ties.
Most importantly, Taron will be graduating from Cincinnati State in Spring 2010 with an Associate’s Degree in Fine Arts.

The Surge’s Jake Jones and Zack Moss were named to the All Conference Second Team.
And head coach Mike Coombs was named the OCCAC Coach of the Year for 2009.
The Surge ended the 2009 regular season with a 15-2-1 overall record, which includes its 6-0-0 record in OCCAC games. Cincinnati State’s tournament run ended Nov. 1 with a 2-0 loss to arch-rival Schoolcraft College in the Division 1 Region 12 final.
