Power Systems Engineering Technology - Smart Grid Major

Power systems technicians monitor and maintain the quality, availability, reliability, transferability, and safety of the power systems we rely on daily. The Power Systems Engineering Technology Smart Grid Major at Cincinnati State provides skills and competencies that will build on the foundation of power systems technicians. This major will educate and train the labor force needed for the new national smart grid. The Smart Grid Major will cover distributed power generation and smart transmission line system technology that integrates with local area networks.


Graduates are prepared to:

  • Make use of a technical degree that is both broad-based and highly specialized

Articulation Agreements/Strong Transfer History

The Electrical Engineering Technologies Department has articulation agreements in place with many four-year colleges and universities in the tri-state area and beyond. Many colleges and universities with baccalaureate and graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Technology offer power systems options and majors in their curricula.

Employment Outlook

The power industry faces the challenge of replacing an aging workforce. Industry sources estimate that, within the next five to 10 years, 50 percent of the power industry workforce will be retiring. In addition, the current power grid in the United States faces many challenges, as increasing demand requires smart expansion of generation, transmission, distribution equipment and the integration of smart grid technologies. The need for competent electrical installation, testing, and maintenance personnel will be paramount to the power industry’s success in assuring sustainability of the nation’s smart power grid.
