Surgical Technology (ST)

Surgical Technology focuses on the scrub role during general and specialty surgical procedures. The surgical technologist provides patient care before, during, and after surgery. Responsibilities include preparation of operative equipment and supplies, instrumentation during operative procedures, and other intra-operative patient care activities. Surgical technologists also share circulating tasks with nurses. Theory and practice are integrated through the use of simulated laboratory practices and hospital and ambulatory surgery operating room experiences.

Graduates are prepared to:

  • Demonstrate competencies in entry-level surgical skills
  • Serve in the scrub or assistant circulator role on the surgical team
  • Serve in the private scrub role for surgeons
  • Serve as central service manager

Credentialing
Graduates are prepared to take the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting certification examination for designation as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

Employment Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, surgical technology is one of the top ten fastest growing occupations. Three-quarters of all surgical technologists work in hospitals, although employment in physicians’ offices and outpatient centers is expected to rise, increasing the opportunities for surgical technologists. In addition, opportunities for jobs are expected to grow faster than the average as the volume of surgeries increases.

Graduate Starting Salary Projections
$31,000–$43,000 annually; $15–$21/hour

The Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education
in Surgical Technology in cooperation with Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Surgical Technology - First Assistant Certificate

The Surgical Technical – First Assistant one-year certificate program prepares the Certified Surgical Technologist for an entry-level position in the first assistant role. This accelerated alternative delivery program provides formal educational preparation that enhances the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective behaviors necessary for a first assistant to function in a collaborative relationship with the perioperative team. The certificate includes supervised clinical practice that is individualized and self directed. Classes are offered in a combination of on-line and campus based formats.

Special Admission Requirements
Students entering the program must have a minimum of an associate’s degree from a regionally-accredited educational institution, and certification as a surgical technologies with three years of full-time experience, completed within the last five years.

Students must have successfully completed coursework in microbiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology. In addition, current BLS/CPR certification, acceptable health and immunizations, a completed clinical acceptance form, proof of liability insurance, and computer literacy are required.
