Graduates are prepared to:

Implement and manage systems for electronic medical records and patient health records. Design and develop tools and systems to support clinical decision making and research. Safeguard the security of patient records in compliance with privacy laws and ethical issues related to the sharing of medical data and patient data. Develop standards for the exchange and interoperability of medical data, promoting meaningful use of medical records and data. Select and implement health information systems to provide affordable quality healthcare.

Graduate Starting Salary Projections

$35,000–$50,000 annually

Employment Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of health information technicians is projected to grow by more than 20% through 2020, which is faster than the average for all occupations. Other research estimates place the demand for skilled healthcare information specialists at 40% or greater in the near future, as hospitals and other healthcare organizations move from paper-based records systems to full implementation of electronic medical records to control costs and reduce medical errors. Health information technicians with a strong understanding of computer software and other technology should be in a good position to compete for entry-level jobs.
