Employment Options

Graduates are prepared to:

  • Abstract and code inpatient and ambulatory care records using CPT-4 and ICD-9-CM classification systems
  • Apply legal guidelines for release of medical information
  • Maintain patient databases
  • Monitor documentation compliance with The Joint Commission accreditation standards
  • Take the national certification examination for registered health information technicians (RHIT) offered through the American Health Information Management Association

Graduate Starting Salary Projections

$13–$16/hour

Employment Outlook

The U.S. Department of Labor Statistics predicts that employment of medical records and health information technicians will increase by at least 20% through 2020 (much faster than the average for all occupations) because of increasing need for medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be performed for an aging population. Increased use of electronic health records also means more technicians will be needed to carry out responsibilities associated with electronic data management.
