Distance Learning
Online classes make learning virtually possible.
Distance education provides another option to meet the needs of our diverse student population. Through distance learning, students access their Cincinnati State courses remotely, providing maximum flexibility in schedule, location, and learning style.
In distance learning courses, lectures and instructional materials are available to students through web-based instruction, CD, video, or audio media. So students can learn where they are, at a time that’s convenient for them, and in the style that’s most conducive.
What is distance learning?
Distance learning is an alternative method of instruction that takes place outside of a traditional classroom setting. Course content is delivered through lectures and instructional materials available through web-based instruction, CD, video, or audio media.
Instructors of distance education courses may require class meetings such as course orientation or exams, at announced times and locations. But in general, distance learning courses are delivered via these alternative methods, requiring minimal to no time on campus. Of course, as a distance learning student, participants have full access to their instructors, either to meet in person, or to communicate via phone, email, or online.
What courses are offered?
Cincinnati State currently offers distance learning courses in a variety of areas. In fact, 10% of the College’s courses are offered online, so there are plenty of options. Areas of study that offer distance learning courses include accounting, biology, business, landscape horticulture, law, engineering and information technologies, health information management, multicompetency health, office technology, and much more.
A personal touch
And, contrary to popular belief, distance learning can be more personal and interactive than traditional classroom courses. Cincinnati State’s online courses are developed and delivered by the same faculty who teach our face-to-face courses. The interaction, content, and learning provided by these courses are comparable in quality to our traditional classroom courses. What’s more, students who are uncomfortable asking questions in class can communicate more comfortably with faculty, as instructors are available to answer student questions either in person or by phone during office hours.
How does it work?
Many distance learning courses are offered through the Blackboard Learning System, a web-based course instruction system. All courses that have a web presence or are web-enhanced are listed on the Cincinnati State Blackboard page. Courses that are delivered as full web-based classes are designated in the College catalog. Distance learning students may need to download Quicktime Player, Flash and Shockwave Players, Acrobat, Real Player, or Windows Media Player to successfully particpate in distance courses.
Is distance for me?
Distance education can be a valuable learning option for many people. Courses are best suited for individuals who are dedicated, self-disciplined, and ready to learn.
