WDC sets lineup for Winter 2010 health care offerings

wdc health classesCincinnati State’s Workforce Development Center will offer a variety of health-related courses for the Winter 2010 term.

Registration is open for programs geared toward pharmacy tech preparation, dental assisting and phlebotomy technicians.

Also on tap is a course geared toward individuals who wish to seek certification as a Registered Central Service Technician.

“We’ve designed these courses to appeal to men and women who are seeking comprehensive, high-quality training on an accelerated schedule,’’ said Dryden Jones, Business Manager for Healthcare Business Solutions at the Workforce Development Center.

“We’re offering our most popular programs at times that seem most convenient to the public we’re trying to serve,’’ Jones said.

Among the health-related courses offered for winter 2010 at the WDC:

Pharmacy Technician Program
This comprehensive 50-hour course will introduce students to the field and prepare them to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam. Pharmacy techs work under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care venues. Course content includes medical terminology specific to pharmacy; reading and interpreting prescriptions; and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, IV flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensation of prescriptions, inventory control and billing/reimbursement procedures.

The course will meet on Monday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. between March 1, 2010 . 14 and April 19, 2010 . Cost, including textbooks, is $999.

Dental Assisting
The 60-hour dental assisting program prepares students for entry level positions in a fast growing field. The course includes the history and legal aspects of dentistry, an introduction to the modern dental office and the fundamentals of clinical practice. In addition to preparing students for entry level administrative jobs, this course is designed for students who are considering a program in dental hygiene. There is no state or national certification objective with this course. Cost is $1,199 including textbooks.

The class will meet from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday from March 2, 2020 through April 27, 2010. Cost is $1,199, including textbooks.

Phlebotomy Technician Program
This 90-hour class prepares individuals to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and learn to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work will include terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; hands-on practice with specimens; and training in skills and techniques. This course does not involve an outside externship rotation.

The class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursdays from March 2, 2010 through June 1, 2010 . Cost is $1,599, including textbooks.
