Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams came away with wins in a trip to Edison Community College Wednesday.

The Lady Surge beat the Edison Chargers 83 -64, extending their record to 16-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference. Edison tested Cincinnati State early on as each team traded buckets throughout the first half. The Surge's Allayah Craighead provided a spark off the bench scoring 12 first half points. Guard Dominique Fischer hit a three pointer before time expired to give Cincinnati State a 2-point lead going into the break. The Surge hit its stride in the second half. Led by Fischer with 11 second half points, 9 points from Asia Dillingham and 8 points from Kara McLemore, Cincinnati State made a run and never looked backed. Fischer led all scorers with 21 points to go along with 5 assists. Center Taylor Frazier recorded 5 blocks to go with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals. Craighead scored 18 points in the victory.

The Lady Surge, who are currently ranked no. 2 in the NJCAA polls, will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21 on the road against Owens Community College.

For the men’s team, Wednesday’s 82-68 win was doubly sweet as it marked the first conference win of the season. Early in the game, Cincinnati State was down 11-3 before the coaching staff called a timeout. Afterward, the Surge stepped up its defensive pressure and the team jumped to an 8 point lead. Midway through the second half, Cincinnati State extended its margin to 15 led by the shooting of sophomores Charles Clarke, Marquis Wilson, Anton Hutchins and Karriem Baker. Clarke finished with a game high 19 points. Wilson finished with 17 points and 6 assists. Hutchins finished with 16 points and led the way defensively with 4 steals while Karriem Baker finished with 11 points. All four players shot 50% or better from the floor as the Surge pulled away to the 14-point victory. Improving to 12-4 overall with a 1-1 conference record, the Surge will also return to action on the road against Owens Community College on Saturday, Jan. 21.
