Students take the lead in voter education project

Monday, October 7, 2019

Two Cincinnati State students are encouraging others in the College community to register to vote, and are raising awareness of the importance of voting, through the Campus Election Engagement Project (CEEP).

CEEP is a national, nonpartisan project that helps faculty, staff, and student leaders at America’s colleges and universities engage students in federal, state, and local elections.

Students Katrina Davis and Richard Mlinar (behind the table in photo) are CEEP Fellows, who received training so they can help carry out voter education activities, such as providing assistance navigating voting rules, distributing nonpartisan candidate guides and other educational materials, and organizing and implementing Get Out The Vote events.

  • Since September, Richard and Katrina's efforts have helped over 100 students register to vote or update their voter information.

  • In addition, they have helped many other students learn about the difference their vote can make.

  • Future plans include bringing speakers to campus, and providing additional resources to help promote civic engagement of Cincinnati State students.

Richard will graduate in Spring 2020 with an Associate of Arts degree. He plans to earn a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership, but hasn't yet decided on the school. In addition to CEEP, Richard is involved in the Honors Program, Leadership Club, Phi Theta Kappa, TRiO, and the President’s Ambassador Program.

Katrina is a first-generation college student who is working toward an Associate of Arts degree with focus in urban studies and social work. She enjoys helping  her community and hopes to see her peers express their political voice through voting.

CEEP fellow Katrina Davis promoted voter education and registration during the Career and Co-op Job Fair on Clifton Campus.
