Cincinnati State helps launch ESL Consortium

Cincinnati State hosted the initial meeting of the Adult ESL (English as a Second Language) Consortium of Greater Cincinnati on Nov. 2.

Cincinnati State ESL instructor Maggie Oliveira (at the podium in photo above) said nearly 50 participants attended the meeting, representing a variety of organizations that offer adult ESL services in the Cincinnati area.

Maggie said the goal of the new organization is to increase collaboration among the organizations, which include colleges, private language schools, libraries, non-profit and government-funded support agencies, as well as K-12 schools that offer adult ESL for parents.

Other meeting participants represented organizations that help immigrants with career reintegration and access to the job market.

The Consortium will meet at Cincinnati State quarterly to provide teacher training for volunteer instructors, generate resource guides for those who are new to Cincinnati, and coordinate services across organizations.

Anyone with an interest in adult ESL is welcome to join. For more information, please contact Maggie at maggie.oliveira@cincinnatistate.edu or (513) 569-4848.
