Cincinnati State offers placement testing for non-native speakers of English, and the individualized assistance you need to succeed.
Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program helps non-native speakers of English improve their English proficiency through integrated skills courses including:
- Listening comprehension
Some students may need to successfully complete ESL courses to continue with their degree program at Cincinnati State.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Courses
ESL 051 English as a Second Language Level 1
A course that integrates English skills including reading, writing, grammar, speaking, and listening comprehension. Topics include American culture, cross-cultural communication, and the immigrant experience. Prerequisites: None.
ESL 052 English as a Second Language Level 2
Continuation of ESL 51. Topics include American culture, cross-cultural communication, the immigrant experience, and current events. Prerequisite: ESL 051 or appropriate placement test score.
Free Beginning Level and Intermediate Level ESL
Cincinnati State offers free English as a Second Language classes during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. The classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the Clifton campus. No registration is required. These classes are open to the public.
ESL Conversation Group
The ESL conversation group meets every Wednesday during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. The group meets from noon to 1 p.m. on the Clifton campus. It's a great opportunity to have engaging conversations about a variety of topics and to practice verbal skills in a relaxed, friendly setting.
