I want to study ESL at Cincinnati State! What are my options?
We offer two types of ESL classes:
- Academic ESL courses for registered students.
- Free ESL classes for community members.
What are Academic ESL courses?
Academic ESL Classes are fifteen-week courses for current students at Cincinnati State. You must enroll as a student to take these courses.
- There are currently two academic ESL courses: ESL 051 and ESL 052. These courses focus on intermediate level speaking, writing, listening and reading skills.
- ESL 051 and 052 are 15-week courses offered each semester.

What are free community ESL classes?
- Our free ESL classes are a service for community members who want to improve their English skills.
- These classes are less formal than our academic courses.
How do I register for ESL classes?
- Free Community Class – There is no registration for the free ESL classes. You can come to class when it’s convenient for you.
- Academic ESL courses – You must apply for admission to Cincinnati State before you can register for academic ESL courses.
How much do ESL classes cost?
- Students in academic ESL courses are responsible for paying tuition, and usually have to buy a textbook.
- Please see the Tuition and Fees page for info about tuition costs.
- Students in the free ESL classes do not have to pay tuition.
What is the schedule for ESL classes?
- The free ESL classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 – 7:30 PM during school semesters.

- Academic ESL course schedules change by the semester.
Where are the ESL classes?
Classes take place at the Cincinnati State Clifton Campus. The address is 3520 Central Parkway, Cincinnati, OH 45223.
I am an au pair visiting the US. Can I get a certificate for attending the free ESL classes?
As of August 2024, we do not verify attendance or document student hours in the free ESL classes. If you need documentation for an au pair visa, you can take one of our academic ESL classes, and your credit will be recorded on a college transcript.

Cincinnati State offers two levels of academic ESL classes, focusing on the writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills needed for college-level coursework.
- Students who want to earn credit for ESL academic courses must complete the admission process and register and pay for courses.
- All courses are offered on Clifton Campus. We do not offer online ESL classes at this time.

F-1 Visa and I-20 sponsorship: International students cannot obtain an F-1 (international student visa) solely for taking ESL classes at Cincinnati State. For more information, please visit our International Student Admission page.
