Brewing Science program earned “best beer” kudos at the Ohio Fresh Hop Festival

The Cincinnati State Brewing Science program didn’t just participate in the first-ever Ohio Fresh Hop Festival at HighGrain Brewery on October 14, 2023– the Brewing program also won the award for the best beer at the festival!

The Cincinnati State beer was a Juicy Pale Ale dubbed LH 110: Applied Botany and it received the most votes from festival attendees, beating out beers from 14 professional Ohio breweries.

“We were thrilled to even be asked to participate in this year’s festival, and obviously even more excited to have such a positive response to our beer,” said Caleb Ochs-Naderer, Brewing Science Program Chair.

“Taking part in the festival was an amazing way to showcase our program and all that Cincinnati State has to offer,” Caleb said. “Winning first prize was about as good of icing as you could ever put on that already excellent cake.”

Caleb thanked the CState students, faculty, and staff members who supported the Brewing Science program at the festival. “Seeing the College support made the festival more fun, despite the intermittent rain,” he added.

Unfortunately for those hoping to try the prize-winning brew, Applied Botany was so popular the entire supply is now gone.

Caleb said the program will receive a plaque to display on campus that enshrines the victory.

“We’re already looking forward to defending our title next year!” he said.
